Perhaps you know but all newly registered cars from April must have traffic sign recognition and warnings if you go over the limit. Some even have gone so far as to retard throttle response if you are at the speed limit which can be quite disconcerting. It can be turned off but it's back again the next time you get in. I've been living with it since July and it's a massive PITA. Something to keep in mind. Who is responsible for deciding and subsequently requiring these new "driver Aids" to be implemented ? The EU. We might have left but they still rule the roost. We have no worthwhile volume of UK car manufacture to allow us to make up our own rules.

Major manufacturers may well not want to disrupt their economies of scale to produce a UK specific model ... this stuff is electronic so does not have to be enabled in the UK market just because it's there. (We're certainly going to see autonomous driving kit eneabled or disabled depending on how receptive a particular national market is to having it active on their roads) ... if we follow the EU on this it's because there's a government political will for us to do so.

Manufacturers are used to varying specifications of different import markets eg California has different specs to the rest of the USA, Harley used to use the most stringent regulations of Switzerland for all its European destined motorcycles and so on. Whilst some of this new technology/software may be embedded, it may not be active eg I don't think the UK law currently allows autonomous driving.
Must admit some of this tech will frustrate me, but I already disable stop/start every time I get in the car as we are always driving in dense traffic from the outset and the feature disables itself after 4 stop starts anyway.

Must admit some of this tech will frustrate me Yeah, me too. It's the price we pay for declining standards of driving on our roads. Despite massive increases in primary and secondary vehicle safety systems, we are still killing or seriously injuring something like 11,000 people on our roads every year. Forcing manufacturers to fit ever more intrusive driver aids is a lot more politically palatable and a great deal cheaper than ensuring people are better trained before they are allowed out on the roads - especially when the overwhelming majority of drivers see their vehicle as a mode of transport that gets them from A to B whilst they are dicking about with their mobile phones.

Canned the idea of an EV. As far as I can see, it would cost me near enough double the equivalent petrol car and all the chat about huge depreciation doesnt seem to be correct at my end of the market. Sure those who have bought new £150k Porkers have suffered large losses but I cant raise much sympathy for those who buy over sized SUVs made by a firm started by a German war criminal.

On the radio this morning was mentioned a service in Winchester today for those bereaved and affected by the 30,000 deaths and serious injuries this year. Horrific. I guess most of those here are careful and responsible drivers who take pride in their driving but so many others aren't. Whether that is a lack of good training or that they find their high tech cars do so much for them that they lose concentration. On a major road my Volvo will keep pace with the car in front and keep itself in lane without me doing anything. I find it uncomfortable so I turn that facility off but I still have a car with some 400bhp available with a top speed well in excess of he UK speed limit (Volvo restrict it to 112mph) and a 0-60 time of 4.5secs 50 years ago I was quite happy with a 1500cc (60bhp) Ford Cortina which had a top speed of about 80mph. I know there was the Lotus Cortina with a top speed of 108mph but they were relatively rare. Now we have small relatively inexpensive hatch backs that would easily leave a Lotus Cortina standing. Why we think we need such high performance baffles me.
