Yes you can remove the bottom section of the door card (to get to the interior door handle mechanism) quite easily - its just a question of removing a number of visible screws, the door pull and the hex head screw from the handle assembly itself. The only minor difficulty with the bottom section of the door card being the screw nearest the hinge which overhangs the running board and requires a very short screwdriver. But in my case it is the section of card above that, that is reluctant to come off. As John V6 has advised, perhaps I will have another go using more force.

There are tools you can buy or you can use brute strength. I think I used a screwdriver with card behind to protect the leather near the fixing plus pulling the card.. The one right at the front can be left as you can just get access.
In typical MMC fashion the passenger side was a pig, the drivers side easy Thank you for your advice John. I will have another go using more force. You didn't mention it, so I am presuming the retaining clips or plug or whatever they are, came away with the card and were intact and reusable, rather than being sacrificial and needing a fresh fixing?

Looks like an Austin Allegro door handle, and they weren't reliable either

Yes reusable. Similar to these on the back panel Thanks. Now I can see what I am dealing with - friction plugs. I guess the wooden frame into which they secure can swell and grip them tight. Anyway I will attack them with renewed resolve later today!
