Would love to have eavesdropped a conversation between Dennis Skinner (AKA the beast of Bolsover) and RM.
As an aside, Ken Clarke's autobiography is a fascinating read for folks of a certain age - it goes into some detail about how he saw a decline in standards in his last years in the house. You could well be surprised! Early ibn my career I worked at a company whose recruitment policy for senior managers depended on catholic officers from one of the cavalry regiments. People just like JRM. When the latest one arrived I was given the job of introducing him to the shop stewards, as rough a bunch of South Yorkshire hard left activists as you can imagine. I was dreading the job so imagine my surprise to find the shop stewards when talking to the new officer actually standing to attention, addressing him as Sir and getting along really very well. Totally contrary to their attitude to most other managers. The college I went to at my university was full or the output of Eton / Harrow / Winchester etc and there was I as a northern grammar school boy. My best pal there came from Harrow, several others were sons of Peers, Princes etc. Without exception they were all friendly and happy to get along. The prejudice you see is prejudice against them much like the british dislike of the rich and successful whatever their background.. JRM seems to me to have been one of the few honest politicians we have had. Certainly more so than Boris or Starmer or Reeves

K,
The difference between Sir Alec Douglas-Hume and modern politicians IMHO is that Sir Alec was a statesman , compared to this current shower. I struggle to find any honesty and integrity in the current cabinet. KS is IMHO worse than BJ, at least with BJ you knew upfront you were getting a rouge.

Harold Macmillan was the only real UK Statesman I have known during my time here. Possibly it's a generation thing as he was an Infantry Officer in WW1 so fought for the freedom of the country he loved and knew all about service to the public as he was seriously wounded in action and suffered daily.
Nye Bevan was before my time but he was one in a very quiet way.
Helmut Schmidt and John F Kennedy had it too. Gravitas is a quality few possess or earn maybe.
I find that a sorry state of affairs too.
For the last 40 years Politics have become a business not a conviction and like fast food has been handed over by the USA.

I'm not so sure about JFK, certainly he was a visionary, but he bought us pretty close to a nuclear war over Cuba and there are always lingering doubts about any Mob connections.
I was too young to appreciate Supermac, like many politicians from that time, they in general seemed to have a greater sense of duty. Then again ,all politics has its generational problems/scandals etc it was John Profumo in '63 that eventually brought Harold Macmillian's government down.

Now this lot are in, I have a fighting chance of gaining some wealth that I can stick in a tin box.
Edit - in real terms, I'm getting an extra £150 a month. As as result, me and the Mrs have redone our living room, buying stuff from local/small business where possible. All that money has gone back into the community and the Government has also gained as we've paid VAT on everything. Win-win for everyone!

I'm sure those who are now unemployed or about to become unemployed due to the Labour NIC raid, will appreciate how well some in society are being rewarded at their expense........the same people who also have suffered from wage stagnation etc. and now no income at all and face an uncertain future as benefit claimants are coming under attack and our economy starts to go into decline.....but good for you, feck everyone else seems to be the Labour message unless you are a Civil Servant, Local Authority employee. . Labour managed to achieve 8% unemployment before they were kicked out of office last time, looks like they are going to head for a new record of unemployment again. Wait till they combine all the Local Authority pensions and then most likely invest them in crap schemes leaving them broke at the end of it all, see how that prospect is appealing.

Most of the forecasts are showing economic growth for the next two years, the ONS showed a 4.8% boost in overall earnings from July to September 2024. Employment rates are larger unchanged from 12 months ago, but are up in the last quarter. However, time will tell. Remember, we predicted that Brexit was going to be an absolute sh1tshow, and look how well that's turned out.

Employment rates are larger unchanged from 12 months ago, but are up in the last quarter. However, time will tell. The last quarter was Labour in power = unemployment up, the UK has gone from being the leading growing economy to flat lining, with business and consumer confidence at an all time low, within a few short months of labour talking the UK down. Businesses have already stated that they have adjusted their hiring plans downwards, prices will rise to pass on the increased costs........its lower growth than previously forecast under the other previous administration. If business and consumer confidence doesn't return, we are up sh*te creek, big style and I expect further tax rises soon. Whilst I don't like Trump we will have to get in bed with him or at least appear to, to avoid a trade war, which will engulf the EU. Too often people forget the economics and interdependences of US global trade, well know expression 'when the US sneezes the world catches a cold'. Quite a few notable EU leaders recognise the unique position the UK has with Trump, he is an Anglophile, and hope the UKk will be a conduit or bridge between them and the US to mitigate any trade war. I get the distinct impression that Labour will support a EU position on regulation and restrictions on trade and therefore embroil the UK in the EU trade dispute with US, rather than be an honest broker between the US and EU (if getting involved at all) and keep us out of a UK trade war Well the boost in earnings is most likely Doctors, Civil Servants, Local Authority staff, railway staff. LA staff who may get a 4 day week shortly for the same money. UK productivity especially in the public sector has fallen and continues to fall.
