CL+4, I have zero emotional involvement with my Tesla, it for me is an efficient personal transportation device....I suspect anyone other than a ICE fundamentalist or very high daily mileage users, would take to EV usage very comfortably if they had easy access to home or workplace charging.

As an e-car developer I read this thread with much interest.

One thing is currently missing for me. Many fear the high depreciation. It is currently true and a good chance for the less wealthy to hop on the EV train.
The time will come where the public has to understand, that EVs will last much longer as the thought. Prices will stabilize the following years.

The time is perfect to start with a used EV or to keep the new one a bit longer...

I started with elctric company cars five years ago and have to say:

e-tron 50 - 250km range => not enough for my business but with up to 135KW charging capacity ok
e-tron 55 - 400km range => ok for my business with up to 150KW charging capacity even better (still made sure to start fully charged for longer trips)
had 4 of them latest Q8 e-tron 55 (all similar) consumption ca. 24 KW/H per 100km
S e-tron GT this year - very engaging machine (no wonder as I did it;- if you haven`t driven one - do so...)) - 550km range and up to 320KW charging capacity => drove it just as I used to use ICEs as fast charging is superfast that I did not bother even for longer trips.
Q6 e-tron see above - does all I need - less sporty - at half of the price - ok
Q4 current car - much simpler and more basic but in the mean time 500km range with 175KW charging capacity.

For me charging speed is more important than range as for day to day any range will do and for long trips the duration of your brake is essential.

Agreed. I know that many people seem to view range as some kind of deal breaker but even for a range-limited car stopping for 20 minutes or so every couple of hours doesn't seem to be a bad thing in any case.

The only thing that bothers me slightly is that the capacity of a home charger, coupled with the restricted hours of cheap electricity, might be a bit of a pain for those who don't like to charge every night. 5 hours at 7kW only gives around 32 kWh, which is around 110 - 120 miles of range. Absolutely fine for us as we hardly ever do more than that in one day. If one wanted to put more range into the car one would need to move into peak pricing range which jacks the cost up a bit. Still better than paying 90p/kWh or whatever at a fast charger though.

CLPlusFour ... however, the car was gradually introduced over an existing transport system geared round the horse and walking (plus trains and boats) ... that kept on being used until the car matured into a widely available alternative (I even still have a horse! 🙂) ... to just legislate ICE cars away over a short time span while EV is yet to mature or be available to the wider public is different altogether ... big sections of society will be denied personal transport ... and in a world of out of town shopping and work no longer at the end of the street thats a serious issue for anyone priced out of EVs.

Of one thing I'm sure is that once ICE is as good as dead it won't matter what the successor power is, it will cost us exactly as much as it does today ... exactly what the 'market' (ie you and me) will bear .... subsidies will melt away and the industry knows we have been willing to pay 'X-amount' for personal mobility so it won't matter if it's run on renewables, hydrogen or Zorg-energy extracted from an adjacent reality ... one way or another we will end up fleeced for the same coin! 🙂

K I completely agree with you. It's probably my bad English again.
I wanted to present exactly your argument. Politicians must finally realize that it takes time to be able to produce affordable EV cars for everyone. Not even a rich country like Germany can afford to achieve this through subsidies, and depriving a large part of the population of mobility creates major social tensions.
But the time will come and EVs will be the cheaper option.

CLPlusFour .... your English is just fine! 🙂 ... my only addition to your post was to note that, in the case of the original introduction of the car, the previous, and wholly functional, transport system was left in place until the new one grew naturally to supplant it .... whereas today political zealotry seeks to destroy the working system our whole society depends on before the new one is anywhere near able to replace it for huge swathes of society.
