I miss my old mx5 and the Golf convertible is nowhere near as much fun to drive. I’m idly considering swapping it for either a Mini Cooper convertible or its more powerful S sibling. Model years 2016-8 with a budget of around £10-12k assuming a px of £5-6k on my 2015 golf 2.0 tdi.

I’d welcome thoughts and experiences as I think some here have owned minis. We’ve has a 54 reg cooper, 2017 countryman all 4 diesel and a 2018 clubman diesel. But no petrol models and nothing ‘sporty’

Whilst I've always preferred Mercedes convertibles, I've owned or driven the various BMW range of convertibles and the boot size is very useful compared to the mini.

Good friends of ours are on their second Mini Cabriolet and are very happy with them.

They have a Hallberg Rassy as their go faster touring toy and Golf petrol for everyday use.

Consider the F54 Clubman Cooper D Gary, introduced in 2015. 147 bhp from the 2 litre B47 engine and 60+ mpg. VED presently £35/annum. Adequate boot space for touring or a big shop and masses of it with rear seats folded down providing a deep flat loading space. I suspect the longer wheelbase over the saloon version gives better handling although we bought ours with the 17 inch wheel option shod with 235 tyres. The chilli pack it also came with was icing on the cake.

I specifically want a convertible. The golf is £35 tax and 65+mpg, but oh so boring! Zzzzzz

Or a Mini One Diesel (Baker Street) , ours is zero rd tax. Not sure if they do a convertible in this trim though

Often fancied a Hallberg Rassy but "go faster" is not an adjective I would apply to any of them. They are the marine equivalent of a Volvo estate, which I was disappointed to hear that Volvo are giving up making. What is there for a young man to aspire to now he cant have a Volvo Estate, a wife, two kids and a black lb?

I agree it was a figure of speech to demonstrate that sailing in luxury is their passion as opposed to cars.

They are both ex grey funnel line so are pretty adventurous.

I thought they canned the Volvo RHD estate in U.K., but not the LHD in Europe but then relented re UK .Is this not he case ?

PS My wife enjoyed having an MX5 for12 weeks on a daft insurance business lease contract, we ran for 3 years . New cars every 12 weeks but they could be taken back at a moments notice for insurance claims. In the end cleaning them before giving them back became a pain in the butt and we decided to buy cars .
