That takes some getting my head round, were there so few cars around then which to me seems a relatively short time ago now.

Yep .. even in London in the '50s there were two cars in our whole street ... the Chemist shop owner on the corner had a rather grand looking Riley RME and the was an old giant Buick down the other end (presumably got cheap from a returning US serviceman) that rarely moved due to it's thirst for petrol .... handful of motorcycle combinations and that was it .... other than us kids racketing about on our pushbikes.

My father bought a Citroen 2CV new in 1958. There were only a few car in the street in Amsterdam, where we lived. Born in 1957, I remember the 2CV! With a turn knob for the wipers when it stood still! I think it was 1962-63 he bought a Morris Minor traveller! Good memories! In the winter he was always 10 minutes ahead of us, because there were some starting procedures....! At present I preheat our EV when it's cold in the morning.......!!

Both the Chinese and Russian systems require entrepreneurs to create the wealth.......only real difference with the ROW is that both Chinese and Russian Oligarchs that cease to toe the party line just disappear, die suddenly or jailed for life.

I have started using the bus to get into town (now that I have a bus pass ) should I need to go there, provided the weather is reasonably clement. Used a lot during my childhood in north Kent and Bucks. All diesels, so the annual 2 week holiday staying in Belfast with relatives was magical travel on trolley buses (until 1969 when they'd all sadly gone).
Good to see the expanding modern tram networks in some cities. I believe some of the old tram rails may still be under the tarmac in town here.

And they will tell you that in China. They plan long term & don't deviate till now in the plan for world domination. I am sure they see Putin as a great distraction to help them.

When I got my first car at 18 there were only 2 other cars in the street one belonged to a Fords worker the other to a trainee driving instructor who used to help repair my 1937 MG, sadly he died before completing the course.

It was a different world Rich. In the early 60s I was at university in Oxford. I had a Triumph Spitfire ( max 90mph, 0to60 maybe 15 secs/) but driving it on empty A roads ( there were no motorways) I could do the journey from home in Bradford to Oxford averaging just on 60mph. Admittedly I was young and daft but the roads were empty, no scameras, plod was in a Morris Minor or similar so you could go for it in relative safety. I only spun it once.

I havent a hope in hell of achieving the same average on the journey in my Ferrari nowadays. I wouldnt even try.
