Graham ... are those 'Advent Wreaths' or just 'Wreaths' ... the thing of putting up greenery goes back before Christianity ... as a non-religious person I'm fuzzy as to the diference?

Have started collecting the firewood together for my Solstice Bonfire ... more my thing 🙂

Back here on earth the Advent wreath signifies the coming of Christ we enjoy the lighting process and is full of life whereas the wreath sans candles is laid in remembrance of lives lost and we do this for our loved one's as a celebration of their lives. For that very reason we don't hang one at our door.
Like so many things Wreath making has become a cult thing and great money spinner down here and probably nationwide.

LIDL sell a good door rendition for 10 quid ;-)

We recently had some maid rootling through our Brown Bin for sprigs of our black Pittisporum which we had recently savaged as she plies her customers with a coffee and they trot home with their effort £65 lighter.
We were quite happy for her to part empty the bin.

Good question Keith. I don't wander up to peoples' front doors just to get a closer look!

Speaking of Winter Solstice there is a saying here for the day of Santa Lucia (Saint Lucy) December 13: "Santa Lucia, il giorno più corto che ci sia" ("Saint Lucy's Day, the shortest day."). As we know that the actual Winter Solstice is on the December 21, December 22, or December 23 it has been worrying me as to why this saying is so fixed in the local tradition. I then thought to look up sunset and sunrise times and discovered that whilst the sunrise continues to come later each day the day of Santa Lucia is one of a few days in which the sun sets earliest. After Santa Lucia the sun sets a little later each day.

Our local Celtic Bonfire, complete with a figure representing "Old Man Winter", is around the end of January, traditionally the coldest day of the year.





In Roman times this area was Gallia Cisalpina. We still have villages where people predominantly have fair or red hair and blue eyes. We even have bagpipes.
