Our hearts go out to our German friends over there and hope none of you have been directly affected here.

Having attended a fair few whilst working in your country and soaking up the fun this makes me sad.

What an horrific action.
Appalling brutality by the perpetrator.
WHY???


My thoughts go to all of the people affected.

This morning I was searching the news to see if there was any more information on this topic. It is indeed very sad and brings back memeories of other similar acts of madness.
As a doctor one would think that he would have been too empathetic with others but something must have triggered this act of insanity, probably the full story will never be made public.
The simple fact is that violence and hate will breed other acts of violence and hate. We will never be free of it.

It is very, very sad and it can happen anywhere. I am posting an article below with some background information about the assassin in German, you can use deepl or google translator. From my point of view a psychopath who was himself a psychiatrist and psychotherapist as you can read. With outlandish, extreme and sometimes strongly contradictory statements that he had already been publishing for a few years. I find it very worrying how such obviously mentally disturbed and lost beings adopt the practices of other terrorists.

Having had the great pleasure of visiting the Christmas market in Wiesbaden, I can only imagine the horror that ensued in Magdeburg... so much so I did not watch any of the reporting on the scene...

Seems to me that those who harbour fundamentalist ideal come in and from all sorts of cultures and classes within cultures, be that out of control football supporters, political leaders promoting division, causing riots in the streets, and so much more.

BTW, the two would be assassins who attacked a Scottish Airport, were apparently also Islamic medical professionals.. If their attack with a car bomb made up of gas cylinders, had caused the explosion they intended, it could have perhaps killed and or maimed hundreds of would-be holiday makers queued up in the the check in hall on one of the busiest days in the year.... A twist in the story is that it seems at least one of them was taken to hospital for treatment to his self created burn injuries, and to the very hospital where both had been employed by the NHS....

That was a good read, it seems your security people like ours ignored the risk markers these people carry but still don't control them to some extent.

When I saw tonight on the latest news that all the concrete barriers were in place but one section was left open for the emergency services it made me realise what a cold calculated action this was.

We can only hope this action does not fuel the fire for your extreme right faction with the upcoming election.

Yes, Richard, I hope so too. At the moment, this murderer is being instrumentalized in a very stupid way on German TV. Because he is obviously an anti-Islamist, he is being portrayed as doubly evil by the woke press. His proximity to the AFD is being used to portray the AFD (far-right party) as even worse than it already is. In my view, this is the wrong way to go about it, because it will only further enrage AFD supporters and turn them against democracy. The man is accused of having very bad intentions and the planning was obviously very precise. But in my eyes, the perpetrator is still completely mentally deranged. He should not be instrumentalized for any interest group, whether from the right or the left. That's not to say that I want to defend him. By no means and he should receive his severe punishment (it's best to shoot such offenders in the act, in my opinion). Nevertheless, I would assume schizophrenia or psychosis because apart from Hitler, Stalin and Putin, nobody is that evil without also being mentally disturbed.
BTW all Christmas markets in Germany have been very well secured since the attack on a Christmas market in Berlin in 2017. This Christmas market in East Germany was not!

Heinz, I hadn't realised the market that suffered the lorry attack was unprotected but you never realise threat until it's too late and then you can make a plan.

We have weak government here also and it leaves the door wide open to the loony right wing parties like Farage (the pferde arse and Trump lover) so it is always a concern for the general public.

I share your view and that the perpetrators of such dreadful tragedies are best dealt with at the time on site.

In the last weeks we visited some northern German Christmas Markets.

So here some thoughts about the currant protecton of this markets:

In the last years nearly all german Christmas markets have been protectet with concrete barriers, a lot police etc.

I had expected the same thing this year, as the media and politicians cited a high level of danger.


It's a sad irony that at the last few markets I only saw structural safety measures that were more of an absolute farce.

Celle: A very nice Christmas market we visited yesterday. The security measures there already shocked me in the afternoon on site in Celle: Only some Barges with No Passing signs!

When I read the first news about the tragedy in Magdeburg on our return, my thoughts turned to the extremely rude language used by those responsible in the cities.

I have to stop now because I'm getting incredibly angry again!

I am not surprised you are angry, your eyewitness reports and that damning article are truly shocking.

I can't comment from personal experience on our mock German Markets as I know from the TV that they are going to disappoint me compared to the real thing.

In all the coverage of the markets here I have never noticed any protection mechanisms.

I wish the survivors well and pray for the lost one's and their families.
