Who deserves recognition?
I feel that some recognition, for people who have made a genuine contribution to their community is OK.
Though I think that reference to our historic ‘Empire’ is now inappropriate.

However ‘Sir’ Alan Titchmarsh ??

Agreed Simon, Heathers brother studied with Fry and he was a total untrustworthy arsehole - think Rees Mogg, I'm pleased in one way Jim is sadly no longer with us as he would have gone nuclear with this travesty.

A gardener ffs the whole thing is so far out of kilter with today, when will they ever learn to read the room and sell off some of their Real Estate and numerous Piles to help and house the homeless incoming never bothers me Walking round and pumping hands neither feeds nor houses anyone.. I'm sure most of us here do what they can to help with limited resources, but they could and should be moving mountains to help restore their status and meaning to the public.

As the 'honours' are selected by the government the King has no say to start with. Titchmarsh is getting a CBE not a Sir.
Having said that it has been the case for many years that celebrities get the honours for who they are not always for what they do, but I do know a local lady who was honoured with an MBE for all the work she did for the local, deprived, community

Why should anyone have to sell off their home no matter how seemingly more fortunate they are then someone else? Its all a matter of relative prospective and where you are in the food chain, is it not? Are they the cause of homelessness, of course not, that's clearly at the door of the politicians and the policies they execute.

If the UK population is to rise to the predicted 80m by 2050, homelessness among many other things is going to grow exponentially.. In anticipation maybe we should all give up our front and back gardens for new homes, maybe give up half of our houses whilst we are at it, I'm sure we generally occupy more space than we really need, we all make that personal sacrifice to house the increasing number of homeless, we seem to expect it of others more fortunate than ourselves. But in the main that wont happen.

I believe in the politics of equality in opportunity and raising the opportunities in society for everyone, based on the premise of bringing and lifting everyone up, and not the often common UK approach of trying to bring everyone down.

I think you will find that most people are attempting to help and lift those unfortunate people that often through no fault of their own have fallen by the wayside, many ex service people have been recklessly abandoned by the country whose freedom they fought for and we should feel that shame too.

It is not about reducing other folks lives at all .....

Knighthoods are totally devalued and mean nothing if you look at the collection of "Sir Arseholes" over the past few years.
