My car is 40yrs old in January, what do I have to do to get it tax exempt ?
I will continue to get it mot once a year, will this still be notified to Swansea?

Thank you in advance of any replies.

Happy New Year.

https://www.gov.uk/historic-vehicles

I imagine it will update in April to show vehicles registered before 1st January 1985.

Perhaps it might be best if the DVLA stuck to first registered as the datum as opposed to introducing the term built...? In the case of my Mog, from a dull memory it was built in 1985, but not registered until 1986, perhaps sitting in a dealership for a period of time.. Though if time is taken to read into the regs, it seems first registered may be the likely datum..?

As for where the line might be drawn in terms of modification relative to requirement to present for MOT or not.... With matching numbers yet tubular shockers all round, my old Mog is not as original, having been "restored" at circa 8k miles circa Y2K, which also included a colour change and stainless steel fixings and trim utilised in many areas...Hmm..?

From that which I read, it seems down to the registered keeper to make the decision as to whether the machine is reasonably original....?

Thinking back to the High Court case of Old Number One.... (-:

It is build date, but you can use registered date if you do not know build date - "If your vehicle was built before 1 January 1984, you can stop paying vehicle tax from 1 April 2024. If you do not know when your vehicle was built, but it was registered before 8 January 1984, you do not need to pay vehicle tax from 1 April 2024."

They do offer guidance - https://www.gov.uk/government/publi...-classic-vehicles-mot-exemption-criteria

Sorry to be a pedant but it will not be tax exempt. You will have to change the vehicle's class to "Historic Vehicle" and at the moment there is no charge for taxing a vehicle in that class.
Cheers
John

The GOV.UK website says that "You must apply for a vehicle tax exemption to stop paying vehicle tax. This is sometimes called putting a vehicle into the ‘historic tax class’."

You are not changing your vehicle to Historic Class.. You are applying for Tax Exemption, and if this is granted it is reflected in the change of taxation class to 'Historic' on the V5C

TBM, to me "Tax Exemption" means just that. A historic vehicle is not exempt from having road tax in order for it to be used on the road. It's just free of charge ATM, which is a whole different thing.

The OP just asked about how to apply for Tax Exemption, and I've given instructions on how to do it based om the 40 year old rule.

The term 'Historic' in this circumstance is the 'code' used by the DVLA is siginify the reason for the Tax Exemption.

It may change in the future, as may the 40yr MOT exemption (V112) but that is just supposition and doesn't affect the current status quo.

The MOT and Tax Exemption are not linked - you can have the 40yr MOT Exemption and still pay tax, or have the Tax Exemption and still get MOTs.

I agree with your logic John given you still have to "tax" historic vehicles, albeit at a zero rate. I guess this identifies those that are potentially used on the road as distinct from SORN as well allowing re-confirmation annually the vehicle complies with MOT exemption. Unfortunately though the government do use the term "vehicle tax exemption" in their online document referencing historic vehicles.

My understanding is that the yearly exemption renewal procedure was to ensure that the vehicle used on the road was insured, similar to the process with those that are not Tax Exempt that have to prove insurance and MOT

If the Tax Exempt vehicle does not appear on the MIB database, then you are not permitted to renew the Tax Exemption and must SORN.

Regardless, I think it is better to use the same terminology as the DVLA to avoid confusion.
