You do not mention if you are talking about new or used ? Anything used with a battery in is suffering from noticeable depreciation at the moment and could prove a good buy? If the battery system is of recent design and spec I would not be that bothered about longevity up to 8 years so what does your "quite long" mean?
Honda and Mini will give a very different driving experience which I would have thought could bring a conclusion to the matter? Not better but different. If you look for a BEV or PHEV then include the cost of the wallbox if you want it charged quickly? Do check out the insurance difference as part of the sale as some car insurance companies are going nuts about the potential for batter cars as posted elsewhere. Servicing on PHEV/MHEV which carry the complexity of both can often be higher, worth investigating, BEV is often lower. Looking at the way the current govm't is acting the tax benefits of MHEV/PHEV are likely to expire quite quickly if I had to guess.
I had a go in a Vauxhall Corsa the other day and was surprised how much I liked it, half a size up though?
With the current depressed sales state of the car market the ex-dem and almost new stuff floating around is very attractive.
HTH.

We're slightly off target here. I should have made it clear that the Honda is a mild hybrid ie no external charging. The small EV battery is more about a boost of power occasionally and helping the ICE economy. We arent ( yet) looking at a full BEV as much as anything because of the silly purchase costs.
My concern was with the life of the small Li Ion battery in the Honda. How long will it last - the driver has no control over how it is used so the life should be fairly predictable. And given that we both are in our late 70s, how many driving years will we have to cover anyway?

I suspect dependant on circumstances full EV might be the way to go based on that hybrid seems to have potential to present the worst of both worlds, some with battery milage that seems close to nonsensical, even before you take in climatic conditions, pre heating defrosting wipers headlights etc.etc.etc..hmm...?

Our GTI is 2016 and manual. I would have updated but now only the VW DSG is available, so not interested.
But it's a delight to drive. Quick and refined, a bit hard on the suspension at times, but mid 30s MPG. Up to 40 on occasions. A true successor to the Mk1 Golf GTI. Not because it's a "GTI", because it's a small performance hatch with great build quality. Small being the main appeal!

Personally I would never knowingly buy any product that would contribute to the wealth of Elon Musk. He might be a genius but his support of Trump (is he the puppet master?), self admitted use of drugs, and the fact that he thinks he can interfere in the dmocratic choices of other countries is enough to put him and his companies on my black list.

Howard, personally never owned a Honda but have a petrol veined pal who REALLY loves 'em
His current show off is the Civic Type R with every extra option and all the bells, whistles and carbon bits
He also has a Jazz Hybrid and loves that too for the 'sensible stuff' he says, and he's always been impressed with build quality and dealer service

Apologies Howard, your first post was quite thin on detail and my tiny nerd brain was trying to clarify some of the criteria.
May I ask why you would not consider a BEV (if you have a second car as the long haul cover) as they are becoming quite practical these days. Given the current slump in sales they can be had at better pricing now.
I love the fact that Tesla is so closely aligned with the Cult of Elon and removes any other identity from the company. It's as if he did the entire thing himself. He did get very involved with the Cybertruck design. So many other smart people being overlooked. Having said that Tesla is one of the few BEV companies I would bet on in the future race with China for cars.

It's never bothered me what the CEO's of companies might do when I buy their products. I have a Porsche (for example) - a family who were very enthusiastic members of the Nazi party. I've also owned Mercedes and Audio over the years - companies who used forced labour and behaved somewhat less than impeccably. Elon seems a bit of a pussycat in comparison - but, like Porsche, they make interesting cars.
