I have been following the thread about where to fix the sat nav. I drilled a couple of holes in the window mounting for Tom Tom and a couple more in the radio cover plate(redundant). The sat nav is ok there, not ideal but ok. The problem is that the reception for GPS Signal is not good enough and drops the connection. Does anyone have this experience? The Tom Tom is a very old Go 300 , do newer versions Have better receivers or do I need to go down the external ancillary route? Tony

Hi Tony, I believe that the newer TomToms do have a more sensitive satellite receiver. I have an old 720 and have a newer XL and without doubt the XL is much more able to pickup signals in strange places. eg on my lap. in front of the gear lever, perched in the instrument housing etc,.

I agree with WW. Newer ones have much better reception. That goes for Garmins too.

The newer generations of SatNavs have much more sensitive receivers - look for SIRF 3 or equivalent. If you want to continue with your old SatNav then you'll probably need an external antenna - lots on eBay, but many do not seem to provide any assistance. Seems silly needing such a thing in a Morgan, but my older Garmin was just the same.

Chaps, thanks for your help, I have bought an external GPS receiver, £10.73 I will hook it up and see how it performes. Even if I upgrade to a newer Sat Nav model the remote reciever will help. Again thanks for your advice. All the best Tony

Mine's a Tom-Tom "Go Live 820" - the much-hyped (and then banned) Top Gear edition. It works fine in either under-dash position or stuck to the dash itself - doesn't drop signal. However, as previously mentioned, I can hardly hear the voice-over when it's mounted underneath. Despite this, I soon got sick of Jeremy Clarkson's belligerent bellowing, and switched to the polite young lady whose dulcit tones are hard to hear even when up on the dash! Frankly, I'm amazed that the radio-plate mount you describe works for you. Are you very short? I can't see the radio in my car at all - unless I virtually lie down

Don't think I am very short at 5'8" but the TomTom is mounted on an adjustable window bracket -so brings the pod and display 6-8" closer to me. All the best Tony

My TomTom XL Live works fine under the dash and in town or slowing for junctions I can hear Samantha ordering me about!
I tried the Tom Tom adhesive mount plate under the dash, which placed the unit pretty well for me, but vibrated and so I took some earlier advice and went down the RAM mount route with it clamped to the under dash crossmember. A bit of a fiddle fitting it but it works very well and does not vibrate.
