Isn't a key element in paying attention to the road ahead the decision which gear to select?
Saves all that tension involved in the auto deciding after the event...?

Just been caught with that! A truck wiped off a door mirror on the family Merc. Annoyingly the truck company notified their insurer in case of a claim so my insurer contacted me. I explained that the truck was at fault, I made no claim. Neither did the truck company. And my insurer has confirmed that. But my insurance near doubled.

And from past experience this increase will apply to all 3 cars ( inc the one in my wife's name) and also my motorbike.

I had a no fault collision T packed by a drunk coming out of a side turning at 30 mph, I had bonus protection but my renewal went from £500 to over £800. Needless to say I didn't renew with them.

Nick, I suspect from a very basic point of view, the primary function is to navigate a box on a road system with other boxes on it while trying not to come into contact with any of them, and the fewer decisions you require to make inside the box to carry out that task effectively the more brain power you have available to concentrate on anything happening outside the box which the box controller may not be programmed to expect....?

I suppose with even less requirement of the "driver" to pay attention could risk inducing sleep...!!!

Despite all the above, and my petrolhead upbringing, at this time in my life, of the three cars I have available, the Tesla would be the last to go in any requirement to downsize.

I believe this is what Rolls Royce does, it uses some sort of fancy GPS tech to figure out what the road ahead is doing so the transmission is in the correct gear.

Of course, the whole thing about geared transmissions all derives from the fundamental limitation of ICE engines in that they can't deliver a flat torque response.

An EV is of course always in the correct gear and always at the correct revs to deliver the required amount of torque to the driving wheels evil

Looks like ferry travel will become increasingly more challenging for EV/s with greater restrictions being introduced on ferries

I think its only a matter of time before insurers introduce policy restrictions on EV use, storage and charging.

There may be a possibility that the instantaneous availability of power from EV's and massive acceleration capability, something formerly the preserve of hyper cars, maybe catching the average joe driver out ,as they are not used to or accustomed to it, especially when in wet or slippy conditions. When I first got my 911 Turbo I had to demonstrate to my insurers that I had driven high powered cars before or my premiums would have been really loaded.

That's a heck of a stretch. Talk about dodgy journalism. Still, I suppose it is GB News. DFDS banned on-board charging of EVs 15 years ago after a single incident on one of its ferries. I cannot find any reference to any ferry operators banning or planning to ban EVs from being carried in the future.

Here's a video showing an EV fire being suppressed and controlled in a couple of minutes:

If there is indeed a greater actuarial risk then I would think its inevitable, our Mini SE already costs (£600) nearly twice what the Land Rover or Morgan cost to insure (just over £300 each). It's a similar situation to Range Rover and Land Rover owners in some postcodes, where even JLR's own insurance company is either refusing cover or placing stupidly high premiums on owners.

https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/land-...ners-refused-insurance-due-to-theft-risk

This second article specifically mentions fire risk from RRs as an additional complication

https://www.keithmichaels.co.uk/news/its-not-you-its-your-range-rover/#:~:text=2.,headlines%20for%20the%20wrong%20reasons.

On the other hand, if an insurance company with poor actuarial capabilities reacts inappropriately by overloading EV premiums, they will quickly be forced out of the market by others with a more nuanced risk management strategy.
