Dave, it would seem that you have definitely decided against the idea of EV....? (-:

Whereas I have put my money where my mouth is, on the basis of that which I hope might be a reasonable risk analysis.

Having been around a while at the sharp end of things clearing up when whatever has been bought into as the latest and greatest idea in new kit by the decision makers, to then rush around trying to resolve failures, or clean up after it all fails, or even goes terribly wrong..! As such I more have come to accept that there are quite a few risks to life, and in truth can on occasion struggle to understand why I am still around given the number of real risks I took just to keep things going while at work, or in self- building the home in which I live and so much else...If choosing to drive an old Morgan in todays traffic and on a rare occasion to take on a circa 4k mile trip in it, was out of my comfort zone but then married to one of life`s natural adventurers... The risks of not doing so...? Hmm..

As for Blowing the Bl%dy Doors Off... I do wonder how many modern garage doors might be expected to blow off, if the garage is on fire given all we might have stored in them over the years...what about today... ? Yeah well might be worth re-assessing the risks, especially when even a fireman seems not to have carried out logical (?) risk assessment for the best approach for a garage on fire...?

Ah well Luddite, it's not the issue of being electric that gets me. I still enjoy driving in a manner I enjoyed back in the seventies. So I have very specific needs which I've often listed here.

Size matters to me. Nothing bigger than a Golf MkVI. I have no interest in anything remotely SUV, although I was once given a battle scarred 12 seater minibus as a rental, and thoroughly enjoyed carving through traffic with that, but I digress.

Transmission really matters. Not interested in auto or DSG. Had rentals, and couldn't wait to get rid.

Don't want an electric handbrake. Had rentals, and this is just another lazy driver option.

Most EVs fail on all three. I will go down with my my driving enthusiasm intact.

I'm with Dave. My wife's Volvo has all those features Dave dislikes and I can extract no pleasure at any level driving it. I end up with an inner screaming to get back into the mog or my little abarth.

laugh2 Nice one Boab and Dave, definately with you on the electric handbrake and much else Dave, and as far as the levels of both mental comfort and enjoyment of driving vehicles that are manual in almost every respect, I agree with that too, even down to window winders...if it has such luxuries..(-:

However I feel it is only fair to point out that you might enjoy driving the Tesla from the handbrake point of view, as it just does not have one...(-: Gotta tell you it is just so easy to adapt to being a fan of EV, well for now at least, time will tell..

While it's working I enjoy the comfort and ease of my Volvo (2023 V60 PHEV).
BUT, I do think all the tech is actually detrimental to driving skills. I was fortunate having been taught to drive by experts, but that was years ago.
Now I am told that an instructor of a speed awareness course advises people to use all the driving aids available. Has anyone tried adaptive cruise control in traffic? The brake lights go on 200/300 yards up the road, the car immediately in front of me carries on until they have to brake firmly. ACC means my car does the same, but I have already reduced speed accordingly as I have turned off ACC.

GP, sorry but the reduced requirement of old type driver skills is entirely to be expected in an ever advancing technological world in which many baby boomers like myself feel uncomfortable at times to operate within...? I remember a few decades back when a friend was buying a replacement car for himself, and which his father also drove on occasion, my friend bought an automatic as it it was thought might provide his dad with more time to pay attention to the road instead of making gear changes... I suspect much the same could apply to many baby boomers who as opposed to fighting against technology might just look for the advantages it might provide for the old men they have become... ? (-:

Types he who ever saw the disadvantages in digital technology and the cuts in so many areas it provided...
