I will admit to finding it annoying when travelling with the good lady that at the lights she leaves the gear selected with the clutch depressed, I just don’t do through mechanical sympathy - sad I know.
Launch control best left 🚀 I reckon stupidity at it’s best on roads. I used to criticise my girls on the constant clutch down at lights, but both independently said it was how they were taught Interesting that's the new way, I taught my wife to drive and she has just picked this up somehow..

I was taught the 'stay in gear, with clutch in' method at traffic lights, but only if I was first in the queue. This would have been in 1986.
I don't anymore, especially in the MG as she hates it.

If the clutch held in method is now taught by instructors surely this is plain wrong. This lazy mechanically unsympathetic method can quickly develop into the even lazier hill hold without handbrake whereby you see cars rocking back and forwards, wearing clutch plates and thrust bearing.

Our youngest got her driver's license 6 years ago and also had to learn this nonsense. I think two things have come together: firstly, everything is subordinated to the environment, so no unnecessary gas or noise. On the other hand, modern engine management maintains the idling frequency in a way that was not possible in the past. In other words, you can start modern manual cars with this soulless method on the hill but not a single car that is 20 years old.

The police teach handbrake on into neutral, tyres and tarmac is what you should see tyres of the vehicle in front plus the tarmac between you. Launch control should be called LUNCH control as that is what it will do to the gearbox if used too often, we were told NOT to use it.
