Yes many years ago. John Harrison had a tough time at the end of his life persuading the establishment he deserved the £20,000 prize they offered. I recall only his son benefitting.

Currently a book titled "Tinopolis" by John Edwarrds.
This is a history of tinplate production in my home town of Llanelli.
Llanelli was the world leader in tinplate production and still has Trostre works producing high quality tinplate.
One contributor is Cecil Harries who was the rolling mill manager at Dupirt Steel when I was a metallurgist there. It was an old works that developed from tinplate into steel manufacture rather than tinplate. Private company not British Steel. Now long gone after the Thatcher/MacGregor steel industry "rationalisation". Closed in 1979.
The Cec Harries chapter has a photo of a steam crane with crew that was still in use when I was there and it was VERY old, about 90 or more.
It also has a chapter of the Stamping Works where pots, pans and saucepans were made, hence the Sospan emblem for the town and rugby team and my posting name.
The only remnant is Trostre as heavy industry has gone. Area and street names still hark back to the industrial erabut very little physical evidence remains of the industry. Similar to the Swansea valley that was the world centre for copper production.

This is my next read. Christmas gift not yet started. I have read Phil Tuffnell's book "The Tourist", another Christmas gift. Last year it was "Erebus" by Michael Palin, about the Arctic/Antarctic voyages of discovery by Ross etc on board that ship.

That is an excellent read.

Certainly is.

IIRC, it may well have been your good self who first recommended it and led me to read it.

Thank goodness that my March copy of The Automobile was delivered yesterday.
The weather is horrible in East Devon today: cold, windy and wet; so at least I’ll be able to have a good read.
As always, there appear to be some interesting cars for sale and some great articles.
So, it’s kettle on and looks like a lazy day for me.

Ah, good, that means my copy can't be far away, always a good read. A rare glimpse of serious sunshine up here in Kent, cold but good dogwalking weather. Sadly not Morganning weather for me as I'm recovering from surgery and can't drive for a few weeks. Our Mog is polished and tucked up in the garage awaiting my return to fitness. At least our daughter can drive it, so she's promised to take me out!

Wonderful Bugatti special edition. The entire Bugatti history at a low price. Despite the cover picture, Piech's modern Bugattis are fortunately only dealt with in passing, I'm not particularly interested in them either.

Mine arrived today - just in time for a wet Saturday and I finished a book last night so excellent timing all round.
