Queue the Hovis TV advert music....

Dave, you caused me to remember nursing my Frogeye across the city in winter at sunset with a failed dynamo, driving on sidelights giving hand or no turn signals when I could get away with it, got about a mile or two from home before the tic tic heartbeat of the electric fuel pump finally gave out and the old thing came to a halt. fortunately I had expected not to make it all the way so chose a route where leaving it overnight might just be safe enough.. I stripped the battery and dynamo out of the car and carried them the last mile or two home.... I put the battery on charge overnight stripped the dynamo, cleaned out the groves between the commutator segments, cause of failure worn down carbon brushes...Fortunately there was an auto accessory shop on the next block to where I lived, first thing next morning and I was able to purchase a set of new brushes, fit them and carry the battery and alternator back to where the Sprite was parked up, greatly relieved to find it had not been disturbed, I set about fitting the dynamo and battery back into the old girl.... It was a great feeling to turn the key hear the rapid tick tick of the petrol pump, then slow town, fire up the engine and we were back in business.... What`s more for a 21 year old to want circa 1971....?

Cant help but wonder just how very different things might be today for a 21 year old starting out in married life trying to run an old sports car on a very limited budget .... They are bound to be out there.....?

Though the question was, will it ever be so...? (-: There just seem to be so many other distractions available for the youngsters these days, and it seems that governments wish to up the cost of motoring and regulate ICE cars off the road. As for the future of Classics perhaps it will become a far more niche market along the lines of the VSCC membership, though perhaps for sporty 80`s hatchbacks, thinking XR3 etc.etc.etc. I guess air cooled 911`s will ever be in the mix, as they seem to have been adopted as some form of alternative currency...?

Sorry to drag you all away from this magical subject drift from starter solenoids to Tommy Cooper one liners!!
The problem turned out to be a melted connector block for the exciter wire behind the dashboard coupled with a problem with the relay mount. All fixed and ready for pick up! Happy again!
Thanks for all the input!
