Today Billy the engnieer from Octopus is fitting our home charging point for my MG.

I have seen on some EV forums concerns over the new BSI proposed best practice guide for batteries installed at home PAS 63100:2024
Some saying your house insurance isn't valid etc etc. Others the batteries have to be put outside. crazy2

Based on this I chatted with my home insurance today to warn them I would charge my EV inside my garage & to double check they knew I had solar PV & batteries.

Their feedback was:-
"Charging points and solar panel's with batteries are all things we automatically
cover. We don't need to specify them on your home insurance policy as they are
covered under our policy terms for you."

This is with Privilige Ins. Of course other insurers might be different but I thought as a few of us on here have pv batteries & EVs this might help.

Very useful thanks. I still plan to phone Saga when our solar panels and batteries are installed in May.

I would recommend you do. Insurance companies are slimy folk & will look for any excuse not to pay.

The cheapskates, certainly, but a decent insurance company will have no problem insuring EVs, indoor charging, or indoor storage batteries. We're with NFU and they are absolutely fine about it.

I may be a sceptic as I've been shafted by them before.
Castle told us we had cover for miscellaneous bicycles so didn't need to define them. When one was nicked we couldn't claim as we hadn't defined it in the policy.

My defined value ins on my Roadster didn't pay out as the person at faults insurers ensured it got "repaired" at just below write off despite a bent chassis that wasn't repaired.

So whilst I agree I beleive in belt and braces now.

Anything to do with insurance always put in writing and ask for them to confirm acceptance of any changes/ receipt, so they are aware of any changes to the risks in the policy. We notify our insurers of any major works being performed at the house. as it changes the risk profile. This week we are having the entire house scaffolded, for roof repairs, pointing our 6 chimneys and replace cast iron guttering and fascia boards etc

. Its always worth quantifying with your insurers what your insurance actually covers in areas where work is being undertaken eg we have very expensive Westmoreland slate roof and with scaffolding going up all round, for how long is weather dependant, so there is a possibility although quite remote that our roof tiles and lead section of the roof could be stolen. You might be quite surprised by the answer you get back and how conditional it may be.

I always get copies of the contractor's public liability insurance and request them to do a H&S assessment.

Totally agree regarding keeping insurance companies advised.
I gave my daughter the advice to buy quality insurance, rather than the cheapest.
This certainly paid dividends, when her cottage suffered flood damage, last November.
No issues with the claim (cottage had no history of flooding).

ps I love the reference to your six chimneys.
Reminds me of a dear friend from Norfolk who remarked that “Mummy and Daddy’s house is quite small”
My answer was “Alison, your Mum and Dad’s house has three staircases. Trust me, it’s not small”’

Six chimneys but only 2 staircases, the second staircase for the servants quarters
