I'm just watching as my neighbours take delivery of their new EV, a process that happens every 6 months. They run two EV SUVs which they change when they reach a year old, so today their 24-reg car is being exchanged for a shiny new 74-reg.

I wonder how much this helps the planet?

The opposite ..... takes up to 50,000 miles to make good the extra co2 making an EV takes over making an ICE car .... keeping it less than that costs the planet.

It's how I justify my 50 year old Morgan (and 30 year old Defender) ... how many new cars have their longevity saved from being built ?... not to mention how little there is in an old trad compared to a modern behemoth .... and it's all honest wood and steel so wonderfully recyclable πŸ™‚

K

Ps .... though, as it will eventually succumb to wood-rot and rust, it's more composting than recycling πŸ™‚

Quite a bit less than this, the 50k figure is based on the electricity being generated from fossil fuels. In the UK, on a green energy tariff, it's more like a year/10-12k miles.

But either way, buying a new EV every year is just mental. And if you're going to run ICE, then keeping them a long time is indeed the right way to do it. I've got a bit of catching up to do with you, my Morgan is only 39 years old and my Landie 23. drive

Ah! ... if only we could select where our electrons actually came from by choosing a green tarriff ... 37% renewable generation for 2024 ....so sadly the majority of the little buggers are still a bit grubby!! πŸ˜†

K

Richard ... no claims to eco-sainthood here .... we are really off-grid, but do still have far too many random vehicles ... though they are mostly ancient and I can still only drive/ride one at a time! πŸ™‚

K,

That's 37% on a good day when the turbines are turning, down to 1% of UK requirements the other week, obviously on such days they cease to build EV's and just build ICE's on calm days.
