Fingers crossed I'm just left with the first problem (the wiper/washer glow).

Testing is a litte difficult as I've got to remove a fair bit of dash and dials to get to the back of the alternatior lamp and associated wiring, and the battery is under the rear seat. I'll see what I can rig up.

I'm embarrassed on behalf of the previous owner to post a picture of the current fusebox, It's so bad I've been put off from trying to fix it as it's currently working but I think that it lies at the heart of the problem!

If you could use a few Faston crimp connectors when you sort the fuse box Phil let me know I have some in stock from a previous life of installing/commisioning radio stations..

Yes, it should be a standard Lucas 4 Fuse with the top two linked. I think many on the current box are obsolete. I have a very good colour wiring diagram!

Thanks Rich, I have a good stock, and will probably go for the same black cover style as the originals

AND THIS IS WHY I HATE FECKING ELECTRICS.......

Left home this morning, alternator light on, still charging. Light has been on all the time since Wednesday.

Half way to breakfast, light went out. Still charging. Stopped at breakfast. Turned car off. Turned ignition on, light on, Started car, light off.

Had breakfast, turned ignition on, light on. Started car, light off and stayed off all journey home. Charging fine.

WHAT KIND OF DEVILS JIGGERY POKERY IS GOING ON?

So, as it's cold and raining I'm going to leave the new alternator on the kitchen worktop and see how it goes..

May bring the fusebox work forward and have a crack at half term if the forecast is reasonable.

Frustbloodyrating or what...

I noticed a fuse in the charge light line on an online diagram Phil last night so if that has a poor connection it could well be a good place to visit your fuse block, good luck as the rest of your classic car seems excellent.

VERY frustrating. Numerous different Diagrams - I think they changed them every year to keep people on their toes!

No fuse directly in the charge line, but the green wires that are fed by the same WN wires do go directly to the Wiper Motor and Washer, so a poor connection at the fusebox 5-6 may cause the 'glow'.

Yes, that's not the one I found of course in my random search last night.

To (hopefully) draw all this to a close smile

For about a week I had days of redlight on. redlight off so changed the alternator. Light now off, and charging consistently at 14.2-14.4 (the old one was fluctuating all over the place). Problem 2 solved.

Removed the old fuse box and refitted an original, and a couple of independent fuses as per wiring diagram. Everything that should turn off with the ignition now does!

Wiper motor no longer causes a red light glow, but still getting a very very faint one with the washer motor so need to try and find the earth point for that circuit and clean it up.

However, all in all an overall success.

Thanks again for all the help and encouragement.

Sounds like excellent progress. And still a little of half-term left over too.
