Watching the latest episode of Car SOS makes me question the health and safety some of these restorers take especially whilst being filmed. One of the workers using a hand held linisher and grinder without any form of eye protection made me cringe. It's not the first time I’ve noticed this absolute stupidity on this show. I was always taught as an apprentice to look after your eyes as they are so precious and no matter how small the job is you must always wear eye protection when using any form machinery in the workshop.

At school the wearing of eye protection was instilled in us in no uncertain terms.

Well remember the seriously disturbing poster that proclaimed “The moment of blinding truth - goggles would have saved me”.

I recall a poster in the schools Metalwork shop showing two hammers hitting each other with the caption "Chips can fly off a hammer at the speed of the fastest jet plane". This would have been in the early to mid 1960's and the words have somehow stuck in my mind.

I will never forget the time a woman had to have a wire from a wire brush removed from her eye.

She was wearing safety goggles but when she had finished the job she put the angle grinder on the workbench and took off the safety goggles at the same time.
The wire brush/angle grinder was still turning a bit....

As I said: I'll never forget it and now have safety goggles ready in several places...

When I worked with EDF they were obviously extremely safety-conscious and even the office teams had regular safety messages and debriefings. One that I particularly remember was them saying that a common cause of minor accidents was a maintenance worker finishing a job, stepping back, and tripping over their own toolbox.

I once hooked myself on the lip whilst fly fishing. Couldn't remove it myself so A&E and two stiches. I always wore polarised glasses anyway but there was a photo doing the rounds of someone with a hook in their eye.
As for DIY etc. glasses and mask plus gloves. Not forgetting no loose clothing.
In the steelworks safety gear was mandatory. Boots, helmet, fire proof jacket/trousers. No articial fibres ( they melt easily). Earplugs, glasses/visor. In the lab we moved to tighter PPE especially due to some chemicals.

I'm pretty careful with PPE, but a couple of years ago whilst tidying up in the garden I bent down and speared my left eye on a garden cane, the eye dept at hospital was shut, so had to endure it all night, the following day they removed splinters from the cornea

At a check up 3 months later they confirmed I had permanent damage and was very lucky not to be blinded

This is it still healing up some weeks after - I keep it on my phone to show idiots I see not wearing PPE
