I use Pacsafe security mesh and cable on my motorbikes and will use the same on my cars luggage rack.

I have Rimowa aluminium suitcases in different sizes so I think the idea with the Pacsafe net could be the best one, perhaps in combination with a security cable. Must check the different sizes of my cases and choose the fitting net size.

I will fit my luggage rack for the first time next spring/summer for a trip from Germany to Malvern including the ferry and perhaps some stopovers. We´ll take the big case (two persons, 4 days) to avoid to have to much stuff inside the car.

When I went to Malvern last year we also took the ferry. I was wondering if the cargo bay of the ferry would be camera monitored during the cruise. People have to leave the cargo bay but what If somebody would hide e.g. in the trunk compartment of his van and then takes his time during the cruise to "check" the cars in the cargo bay unhurriedly... I´m really not a pessimist but I´m not interested in experiencing any unpleasant surprise after returing to the car...

I would consider using the smallest case you can manage on the luggage rack and packing heavy items in the car to reduce the weight hanging out behind the rear axle.

Don't loose two much sleep over theft from the ferry car deck. I know there is always a first time but in almost fifty years of cross Channel travels I have yet to hear first hand from anyone robbed in this fashion.

A word of caution in using the pacsafe net.I used this on a soft waterproof bag positioned at the top of the suitcase strapped to the luggage rack. Unfortunately contact was made with the pacsafe net rubbing the rear of the folded hood and a small scuff mark was the result. So take care is my advice.

You beat me to this posting. I was going to tell everyone about the solution I purchased recently for security.

I purchased a 'luggage cable' in 2010 with a special padlock type attachment from an outdoor gear shop but it was a real faff to fit and not attractive. So this has new one (pair) has been perfect.




I saw these on a Morgan at the Silverstone Classic last summer and was ideal. They are a protected stainless steel cable with a good lock for securing your surf boards to your VW Camper!!

I purchased a pair of 2.5m version that is ample for a large Samsonite case (I really wanted the Rimowa Aluminium case but they are expensive!), may have to hunt other sites for these now.

I used Wetndry Boardsports on-line and I was very impressed with service and quality (they even supplied the colours I requested from the selection). No connection just very satisfied customer..

I too use a cycle cable lock (from the local pound shop!) and fasten the suitcase handle to the luggage rack. Deterrent for the opportunist thief I suppose.

Now that really does look like a good solution.

We have friends that discovered items had been stolen from their car on a ferry trip. Unfortunately they did not realise what had happened until they got home.

Another dangerous point for thefts is at the roadside dinners. You don't feel like dragging all your luggage inside just to have a coffee but thieves often hang around the car parks just waiting for an opportunity to steel something, particularly during the holiday periods when people are travelling with luggage.

Beware of using the button on your key at these places as they can read the wireless signal and duplicate it to unlock the car. Always use the key to lock your car manually. Naturally none of the previous two sentences apply to a trad Morgan.

This is our "travelling light" secure solution when we drove to Germany last year.The cable locks are called Pythons for obvious reasons, and if anyone is interested I can look up where I purchased them from, it was not from Mr Simmonds who also sells the same dearer item. I know I'm in a minority of one BUT any new Plus 8 that I would consider replacing my Roadster with at £85K plus would need to have a LOCKABLE boot.
