The oil tank is not vented directly to atmosphere but it is vented via a few things. The hose on the top of the tank is the vent hose and it goes to the Reed valve (under the triangular plate on the crankcase), into the crankcase which is vented into the throttle body inlet via a 0.100" metered orifice. There is a good illustration of the oil tank system in the S&S X-Wedge service manual page 4.8. The service manual is freely available on the MTWC website https://www.mtwc.co.uk/new-5-speeder-page-2/

I think that the oil breather system could be the problem with Rodgers high oil consumption, as Bitsobrits says, check the throttle body vent for signs of oil. There have been occurrences of the Reed valve plate cracking or breaking on some of the biker forums.

Rodger-Guess you didn't like my answer in the leak down test thread? Not a matter of not liking. I took your reply to be if it had been taken apart that may be the problem. To which i replied that it had not been taken apart. I guess I misunderstood your reply. It was not personal

looking at the picture... The reed valve is where the third line from the oil tank enters the engine. I did reroute that line (ages okay) so it had a straight shot. At that time the line had "mayonaise" in it. I have not checked the line currently to see it it is blocked in any fashion.
It looks like it is an easy access to the reed valve. What do I look for to see it the reed valve is working properly?
Thanks for the link to the mtwc site.

okay, the engine to oil tank vent line is clear as a whistle (so rerouting it in the past worked. I have the engine running and no oil is coming up the metered orfice into the throttle body.
I wonder if last fall when I started it up and belched copious amounts of oil into the throttle (full sump). Something cleaned out.

Drove it about 15 miles and do not ee any oil smoke out the exhaust, but that is not farenough to see if it is loosing oil
