I have a 2017 4/4 80th Anniversary car and am considering the SSL suspension upgrades. I'm planning on doing a long road trip in the autumn and the road surfaces are notoriously rough so a significant change in ride quality over potholes and bumps could be worthwhile.
Doing front and rear isn't cheap so I'd be very interested to hear views of those who've made the change. I suspect it's the rear suspension that will make the most difference, has anyone just done the rear or do most do both together?
Thanks in anticipation.
John

I had the front done back in 2013, shortly after they first became available, and I have found it to be excellent, although ti did take a couple of hundred miles and a few adjustments to get them just right.

I never bothered to get the rears done, I fitted a set of Rog's progressive assisters at a tiny fraction of the cost and have been very pleased. A very cost effective solution.

Hi Hamwich,

Could you develop your comment: "I never bothered to get the rears done, I fitted a set of Rog's progressive assisters at a tiny fraction of the cost and have been very pleased. A very cost effective solution."

Any reference, link?

Cheers

I can do that for you John,

Rog posts on here and his assisters are fitted to the rear hoop that the top of the rear shocks are mounted to. It's a fairly simple procedure and to say they are remarkable is an understatement. Fitting instructions come with them. Think for a moment about how the rear suspension system works on a classic Morgan and how little travel between compressed and fully extended the range is... yep! not much. Rog's assisters act like what they are. they sit above the leaf springs and are fully adjustable and as the leaf spring is compressed the tip of the assister comes into contact with the top of the leaf spring. Now heres the clever bit! They are designed like small rubber cone suspension units first pioneered by Sir Alec Issigonis and used on the original Mini. This contact starts to then damp and assist the suspension force and as the spring pushes harder against the cone the cone is increasing in its diameter and thus creating a greater opposing force. Morgan classic suspension just really needs looking after by cleaning and servicing correctly, making sure it works and wear is not an issue. I guarantee that if you fit a set of Rog's assisters clean and lubricate your rear leaf springs the result will astonish you. The front suspension is much the same in that it works very well if correctly looked after. Truly, so many Morgan owners are unhappy with the ride of there car because its just not working to it's optimum level of performance. If you haven't got Brake reaction bars fitted from the top of the front suspension to the chassis side rail behind the front sliding pin then that should help the front end an awful lot if you fit a set.

According to SSL I was the first to adopt their dual rate solution to the rear before front. Admit I already had the factory 5 link rear though using coil overs. The improvement was noticed before I left Dan's drive. It did then highlight the lack of compliance at the front though so fitted their RS kit later.

You can't get away from the inherent lack of travel front or rear but the dual rate does give you an inch or so cushioned ride over less bumpy surfaces.

I had SSL front and rear fitted when I had a 2011 Plus 4. It definitely improved handling and comfort. To be honest, I have no idea how well the original setup was working, but I had the cash available and went ahead with the deal.

I would certainly fit the SSL front and Rog’s assisters before splashing out on the 5 link rear.
Our 2014 4/4 now meets the particular requirements of Mrs F on a long run.
