I learnt to ride at 17 and fly at 18, over the handlebars......twice.

Despite knowing it is a daft idea exactly due to the comments above I was looking at purchasing an electric bike in the near future. An electric Cake Kalk& (who works out these names? are they on drugs?) to allow me to do short trips on small roads.

It has a removable battery and enough flexibility to get out of trouble. We will see if I summon up the focus to go in harms way again?

Why not get an electric Mountain Bike and combine pottering about off-road with getting exercise and keeping fit?

Something like a Cube Stereo Hybrid will get you anywhere, and you don't need all the insurance and licensing hassle of an electric motorcycle.

This will be perfect for down here with all the hills and your drive.
Friends in the village that have a motorcycle have an edge come the season.

More importantly it looks like a large fun factor.

Just for clarity electric bikes should have a max speed of 15mph peddle assist many bikes advertised on the internet are illegal and those that look a bit like a motorbike with pedals are probaly a no no. Twist and go is also illegal they all have to be pedal assist or you will be pulled. My wife and I both have entry level electric bikes and have done nearly 4k in the last two and a half years. Living in a hilly area halves your range but we manage about 18 miles on a charge. Best things we ever bought and that includes the mog. Em

It does seem the language around what's an electric bike (pedal assist) , ebike and electric motorbike plus the licence etc is a messy thing at present. I have been to try a few of the offerings and no one used the same language to describe the offering and so what licence you needed to ride it.

I agree re the "I should get some exercise" bit With the narrow roads around Dartmouth I want to be able to keep up with the traffic and did enjoy having a bike when I was younger. Except for the learn to fly events but I am older and a lot more careful/cynical about other road users now. Plus the fat should help with bouncing on landing?

I am looking at something deliberately more motorbike than cycle as I expect to use it around Dartmouth when I get down there. I would like to do some exploring but it will be during the holiday season so the place goes from 5000 to 15000 and roads choke with parking becoming a total fail. Also I don't have a garage with the house so will have to rent/buy one which will likely be out of town.

I had a list of things my next house should bring - totally stuffed it up when I saw the Old Chapel. Typical of my tiny brain.

Detached so I can turn up the noise without annoying the neighbours (semi)
2 Garages (due to seagull poop on the cars, it has - none, not even parking)
Smaller (50% larger)
etc etc.

But when you walk in the door you get a feel for if it will be right?

So I will be close enough to walk around most days.
Can do electric things for jaunts (me finally going part electric good god)
Proper excessive V8 for real journeys.

Life wouldn't be so much fun if all the boxes got ticked, but it's helpful to tick a few of the boxes.

Living by the sea changes your outlook over time, you adjust to the daily rhythm of the tides and the 2 usually very pronounced and different seasons ie Tourist and non tourist season and they are very marked indeed. We live in a large retirement area, so in winter to judge how cold or more important windy it is out ,we just see how many coats the old dears are wearing as they walk thru the park opposite on they daily trek into town for the shopping.

You tend to get less frosts and snow right next to the foreshore, but far more exposed to winter gales, that make their presence felt as they barrel down your chimneys. It's always nice to listen to the tide turning, usually marked by a slight breeze coming down the chimney.. Having grown up in the Midlands the farest point from the sea I wouldn't live anywhere else than by the sea now.

Alistair ... the language around what's legal in the UK as far as electric bikes are concerned is straightforward .... the lies and weasel words private companies use to avoid being accused of selling illegally is another matter ... not helped by the interwebby punting us ads and info valid in other countries without making that clear. The typical government approach of pussyfooting about trying not to upset anyone didn't help ... trying to be 'fair' and saying they were ok on private land was obviously always going to lead to yob-abuse ... should have just made selling anything that didn't fit the law an offence ... will eventually get to the point where they admit they've lost control and just legalise everything ...weak government gives us legislation by chav. They will of course rebrand their capitulation as being entirely for social/environmental benefit you understand! 😆
