I recall a very heated debate on a motorcycle forum which never reached a definitive conclusion. However, there are some interesting, and seemingly plausible, methods for running in that advocate giving the engine big revs but light loads. I know it is motorcycle engine related but here is one such article link

Ah yes....I've come across that one before! There's been a lot o discussion over the years on the BMW motorbike forums about the correct running in of the oil head engines. They can have a reputation for burning oil until around 15 - 20,000 miles when they bed in! The general consensus is that too gentle running in does not bed in the pistons, rings and cylinders and ends up glazing them.
