I recall a very heated debate on a motorcycle forum which never reached a definitive conclusion. However, there are some interesting, and seemingly plausible, methods for running in that advocate giving the engine big revs but light loads. Ah yes....I've come across that one before! There's been a lot o discussion over the years on the BMW motorbike forums about the correct running in of the oil head engines. They can have a reputation for burning oil until around 15 - 20,000 miles when they bed in! The general consensus is that too gentle running in does not bed in the pistons, rings and cylinders and ends up glazing them.
