signed but I think there is if anything a stronger case for saving british cider. Despite living in a traditional cider making area I find that most pubs and restaurants are stocking muck from the likes of Kopperburg made from general imported apple juice whilst the small British cider orchards using traditional apple cultivars are being grubbed out. Its being labelled as Cyder or worse still Apple Cider ( what else but apples can cider be made from?)

The rot started when we allowed the French to outlaw our traditional celebratory drink Champagne Perry which used to be more highly regarded than Champagne Grape Wine.

Very true Howard. Luckily here in Suffolk you can still get craft ciders.

As a Devon lad I grew up on the scrumpy not that fizzy sweet yellow stuff. I even survived the Cider Bar in Newton Abbot.

No shortage of proper ale and ciders here in Stroud, come to the Crown and Sceptre, there are always 3 ciders and 5 decent ales on. Although it has to be said I don't tend to drink them, I lost my heart to Uley Ale when Chas (RIP) started brewing it back in the mid 1980's, and it's always either the Uley Bitter or the slightly stronger Pig's Ear that I go for.

Our Son Devon born and bred is creating his own orchard in Cornwall with all the old traditional breeds which he gets from THE knowledge on traditional Apple trees, he travels up to go on this guys courses in Dartington. Just up the road from us it is so we all meet up for a meal and stroll around the fabulous gardens at the Hall and try a bit of deer spotting.

He and his wife make their own traditional cider - the old Devon trees do well in Cornwall too.
He has a 1st in Plant Science from Eden and teaches and works there and is passionate about passing on the knowledge.

Great place for Friday nights plus Saturday evenings (in summer) is the Cider Barn v close to Haslebury Plunknett, just off the A30.
Good choice of ciders (including fizzy! ) band, street foods and free parking.
Also sorry to say but on a hot day a Rhubarb Cider at the brewery in Lyme Regis can hit the spot ! Craft Ciders seem to be going against the trend of falling sales of the major brands.

Having spent most of my life in Australia before moving to Italy I have no real understanding of what real ale is but I must say I like a drop of cider, always a dry cider, not that sweet stuff. I started drinking imported British cider when I was about 20 at a cider bar at Crows Nest (North Sydney): it was called the Stoned Crow
The place still exists but no longer serves cider. I suppose it is a bit unreasonable to think it would still be the same 55 years later
Whenever we are in a pub in the UK we try to ask for a local cider (the other half doesn't drink beer) so I am disappointed to hear that true British cider is in trouble. Unfortunately major conglomerates tend to buy up any reasonably successful brand and then change production to make more money.
We have seen this in Italy with small breweries. One in particular outrageous example is Birra Messina which was acquired by the Heineken Group (who also own Italian brands Moretti and Dreher). Despite still publicising the beer as Messina beer they have closed the Messina plant, dismissing all the employees, and move production to another plant.
When we are in France, particularly in Brittany or Normandy, we always try the local ciders. Unfortunately, despite huge apple growing areas in northern Italy, there is no tradition of cider making in Italy. What is available is from small producers and very expensive and very little is imported.

As a self-confessed beer drinker, this is a sensible petition👍

Another traditional experience being flattened out by current trends? No doubt it will come back into fashion in ten years time at quadruple the cost. A bit like the current fashion for playing music on "vinyl" on the oldest, nastiest, cheapest turntables people can find. At £25 a disc with scratches and pops. Do they not realise that there is a reason high quality streaming developed. Said the man with a Rock and a Snobdeck....Ah well I never claimed to be smart.

Thank you for the pointers to the various cider locations, I look forward to trying them when I get down there (all being well) in Summer.
I never got into beer, going from Cider to cocktails and shorts, then learning about wineand fizz. It feels like another unnecessary restriction on life.
I totally agree with the comments re sugar loaded, apple adjacent fizz being marketed as cider in these modern times, quite horrible and the future of diabetes.
Rhubarb Cider sounds interesting.
