Hello

I’ve had some great information and help given to me about a planned trip to France this August. In planning I’m looking to get breakdown cover (although not planning to breakdown) and wondered if anyone had recommendations for the best company to use. RAC can’t answer my questions about not towing an M3W or getting it to the correct mechanic if all goes wrong or any other questions to be frank.
Gott and Wynne have sent me their cover documents, however, has anyone had any experience of the best cover for an M3W should it go wrong abroad !!

And incidentally where do I find the Touring spares recommendations?

This is supposed to be fun🤷‍♂️

Regards
Andrew

I used the G&W breakdown service in Spain after a puncture - on a festival day - in the evening - the day before meaning to catch a ferry. Local agent was great to deal with, took me + wheel to a nearby agri-business who could change the inner tube, so job was done in 3 hrs...

I have used the G&W Euro breakdown service to repatriate my car twice, once from France and the other from Denmark. In common with most, if not all providers inc RAC and AA, the European recovery is outsourced to ERS.

In both cases the recovery took about 5 weeks which was due to them classifying my M3W as a "VIP" car (such as RR, McLaren, Ferrari etc) and waiting until they had a full transporter load to pick up. Once in the UK the car was delivered to my nominated repair garage. They separately arranged my transport home.

The ERS contact centre managed the process and took on board my info about requiring a flatbed suitable for a three wheeler and also allowed me to reject the car going to a non Morgan dealer on the grounds it was a specialist vehicle.

It would have been nice to have got the car back quicker but it was good to have the reassurance of it being in a UK a based covered transport and for and extra £22 at the time with G&W is fantastic value!

Touring spares ... a lot depends on how many of the recommended upgrades/improvements have been done (eg fuel pump...) With most/all done, the Morocco trip experience (13 cars/3000km each) says you don't need much but you may want the reassurance anyway

We carry:
[/list]
rectifier/regulator
a set of Centa rubbers (we have the Bleazey modifcation to enable quick change)
spare walboro fuel pump (we already have one installed)
cam belt
various sensors (throttle position/crank position/lambda/speed) plus idle control plus TSM
rubber bobbins for exhaust mounts
spare tube for front tyre (rear tyre has puncture goo)
tools to do all this

Hope useful

I think it's an optional add on with the car insurance https://www.gottandwynne.co.uk/morgan-sports-car-insurance-scheme/

That sounds like a very reasonable spares list JMD. I would just say that I did the first Walbro fuel pump installation many years ago and it is still going strong, probably 40,000 miles or more now. If you have replaced the standard pump then you probably don't need to carry a spare. If you haven't replaced it...why not?

Not that I have ever used it but the G&W European cover has always looked like good value to me and I have had it for many years.

We took out AA European Breakdown Cover last year before a continental trip because we’ve been very happy with their service in the UK. The AA promise ‘worry-free driving in Europe’ so it seemed like a sensible option in advance of a long tour, although the cover was quite expensive. As it happened, we got as far as the Antwerp ring road before breaking down (due to a failed Supermax sprocket). We duly rang the AA who informed us that because we had broken down on a motorway, we needed to contact the local transport police who would arrange recovery off the road. They gave us the police phone number but didn’t realise at the time that this was the only useful thing they would do for us in the whole sorry debacle. They were totally useless. Worse than useless actually because we kept expecting them to jump into action, with countless calls to them to check what was happening – but nothing did. In the end, we had to do everything ourselves – hotel/car hire/vehicle repair/amended ferry booking. The AA did eventually recompense us for (most) of our expenses but were of no practical use whatsoever.

I accept that the AA rely on local partners in Belgium to provide the service as they don’t have their own staff in Europe. It was the local partner who basically did nothing to help us. Still, all most disappointing.

Did I mention that I wouldn't recommend AA European Breakdown Cover?

We are also looking for European breakdown cover for an extended trip around France in our Plus Six in June. I have read through most of the terms and conditions for the UK companies selling cover for Europe. They are fairly similar with lots of "weasel words" to consider. What does differ is the amount of cover for overnight stays/onward car hire and time spent trying to repair the vehicle locally. One of our main requirements was to enable us to continue our multi stay holiday if the car failed and had to be repatriated to the UK. So far we are tending to go for the top of the range RAC Euro cover.. its fairly expensive but does seem to have a good amount of cover and good reviews.. Unless anyone can advise otherwise??.

Lastly, in France for toll motorways all the insurance companies are saying you have to use the motorways own recovery service, then once off they will attend. Some of the insurances will refund you the cost of the initial recovery off the motorway, others will not.

Used the AA several times in the past and Green Flag which was cheaper.
I currently rely on my Volvo European cover……..for the Volvo naturally . Annual servicing is expensive but I feel that I get
some financial benefit back with this ‘free’ benefit. It hasn’t worked brilliantly on a brake, wheel, gear box lock up in the U.K. when the car was very new, so fingers crossed it might be better in Europe !? ?
MM
PS Fingers crossed non of us venturing into Europe this summer have any breakdowns,
