Would welcome advice from seasoned travellers with luggage, as we prepare for our first longer trip in our Plus Four.

From the many great suggestions on this forum we picked a wheeled waterproof duffel bag from Ortlieb for our rear rack (side panel storage; no spare wheel) and we got a couple of thief-resistant Kanulock straps.

What do you do to strap the luggage on so it cannot take its own surprise holiday on the motorway tarmac?

Is it enough to have a cross arrangements (one vertically in the centre + one horizontally)? Do you loop the straps around the bars at each end or just once around the whole thing (luggage+bars)?

And do you put anything under the bag to protect the chrome bars from scratching?

When I used my Bootbag it had its own straps. Longitudinal and transverse so stopped movement in any direction. I also used a couple of 25mm cheap ratchet type straps as a "belt and braces" extra. No pun intended.
I now use a solid case with Morgan leather straps. I then use a long ratchet strap ( same as before) to hold the extra high level brake light I strap on, this goes across the case so also stops sideways movement. There is a cheap cover on the caee for extra protection. A large " waterproof" , (well 99%), then holdalls on the shelf inside.
The only downside to using a case is limited rear visibility so wing mirror setting is important. The Cobra light is obscured hence the swoppable extra bfake light. Superseal connectors make this easy.

Although a Classic I imagine my solution applies to CX with luggage rack as well. We use 's humungous suitcase wrapped in plastic bag and secured by the leather straps I got FOC with new car, which fit through dedicated slots in rack. The case is further secured laterally by lockable securing strap. I have a home made LED strip mounted on length of wood to act as brake light repeater. This tucks under leather straps and plugs into cobra feed. The SSL dual rate rear suspension copes admirably with the extra 20+Kg even with full tank although I add a couple of clicks to dampers.

Touring by myself, although often with dog, I use the period leather suitcase that I also got FOC. This simply because I have it, it looks great, has waterproof cover and enough space for my personal needs, the weight being suffered. The dog doesn't travel light but I have parcel shelf and footwell to accommodate his needs

I strap two waterproof duffels on the rear rack (overboard) & i've recently swapped to Thule lockable straps as the wire soon came thro' on the kanulocks & caused jamming. the overboard bags had a loop in the handle where it attached to the bag, so I just pass the straps thro' the loops vertically. with anything its just a deterrent, someone with a knife couldn't cut thro' the straps but could easily cut thro the bags. if they want my pants & socks then they're welcome. just watch you don't overload them. I think it's 25kg on the securing points, I was well over that for my first couple of alps trips. I bought two 60l bags for the back, they fit perfect if you don't over pack them to much so as to obscure the upper brake lights (ive the spare wheel). got the orange bags, they've really faded, but it still looks like a life raft strapped on the rear! ive had a couple of light scrapes at the rear with the extra weight, but that's with two large boned people aboard. just had the nitrous fitted, so I may raise the height this year a touch. (thats a lie, as im far too lazy to do that)

I don't know whether Morgan has changed the mounting at the bottom of the luggage rack from MY 2022 onwards. In my case, it was very badly welded and broke off on a trip to Italy.Check this

Posted on another thread as well but in addition to Kanulock strapped up down and left to right, I also wrap each of our waterproof bags in a pacsafe net which also locks to the rack. That way they're further protected from theft e.g. being cut open and provide additional securing points to the car.
