I have a 2006 plus 4 that has had an aluminium radiator fitted - I suspect sifab which seems to be good with no issue. However the steel tie bar that goes between the inner wings and has a bracket to which the top of the radiator is attached has some surface rust. I would like to remove it so I can clean it and paint it before refitting it. If I remove it do I need to support the wings in any way and do I need to measure the space so I can refit it exactly or will the radiator keep the spacing correct and just a matter of replacing the rod and tightening the nuts
Any comments or experience would great

I fitted a si-fab radiator to my plus 4. Part of that installation process was to remove the tie bar completely and replace it with a si-fab version. There was no need to support the wings at all. Once the bar is put back in, simply nip the inner nuts up hand tight to the inner wing panels, then tighten the outer nuts with a spanner.

To remove tie bar you will need to remove outer nuts inside wheel arch and wind in inner ones to allow clearance to remove bar completely (after first detaching radiator mount). Would suggest you make a note of inner nut position (threads showing each side) before doing this so bar goes back in same position with no pre-load on the metal inner wheel arches, which are supported in their own right.
Just another take on what Doug suggests.

Thanks Richard and Doug. It was more the spacing that concerned me. Removing was ok just wondered if the spacing was fickle when replacing as wasn’t sure how self supporting the inner wings are. Now I can move on and stop being annoyed by the surface rust on the bar. Interestingly just in one patch the majority is perfect !

Brush applying ACF-50 to surface rust is a good way of treating this issue without component removal. It dries to a dark colour and remains effective for years. Worth applying to non corroded items as well.

I have no wish to appear boastful, but my rads top mounting retaining bar is made out of stainless steel as are many of the fixings on my Morgan when it was rebuilt by it`s then owner. I beleive that the supplier of the SS kit was perhaps Heart of England Morgans in Hartlebury...
