Thought I'd update this thread. 3M paint protection film is the way to go. Fairly easy to install, wet spay the prepped surface and use a credit card type squeegee to run the water and air out.... middle to the edges. Use a hair dryer to stretch and mould the film around the louvers and cut a central relief in the open space too finish the adhesion. When all has cooled and settled trim louver space edges with a scalpel being careful to not damage the paint then mould the slight edge around as a return. If it ever needs to be removed warm with the hair dryer and peel it away. It won't tear its really strong stuff. Make sure you get 3M, there's a lot of dodgy stuff on the bay and it'll never go on well!
