I have used a short stick with a plumbing clip (of the type used to hold copper pipe to a wall) fixed at each end. Then I just put the stick in place and clip in place.

Thanks chaps for all the info and pictures, I think the best option is to move to California ( it never rains in Southern California or so the song goes.) or maybe New Mexico
