Just not good enough, had there been an accident then your Morgan dependant on how unfortunate the circumstances were, would be subjected to a full engineering inspection and report, and not by any Morgan related business.

At this moment in time I suspect I would not be happy other than a fully recorded and signed report as to exactly the cause of the problem and what was required to resolve it to ensure it could NEVER happen again...

If whoever resolved the issue thinks that the factory should be informed, suggesting some sort of constructional issue, then I might expect the MMC to cover ALL costs involved.

Hope your faith in your Morgan be restored ASAP...

With four hours labour charged I could have put it back on the trailer and brought it home the same day but no that would be too easy. Reading Luddite's post I think Morgan have got away with it again. Didn't want to fall out with Mark maybe I should have been a bit firmer.

I do understand not wishing to fall out with those you depend upon to look after your Morgan, I have a similar issue with my other car as it is on an extended warranty thus no one can maintain it other than an Official Porsche Centre (OPC) or the warranty is void.... My faith in them is somewhat limited, but I`m tied into providing glowing reports after each service.... Seems if they don`t get you one way, they may get you another...!

If the cost and inconvenience is no big deal, I can understand you just wanting to get on and enjoy your Morgan, just not something one usually expects to factor in in terms of the cost of "enjoying" the ownership of any modern vehicle...?

Without knowing the exact details, it is hard to comment but (and perhaps this is me showing a lack of understanding) with a element as critical as steering, is there not a 'safety net' that would stop an incident occurring, such as the one described by Em?

For instance, at a minium, an indicator on critical elements that make it easy to visually check the bolt is in the correct position or ideally, some form of cotter pin that holds the bolts in place? As I said, perhaps I am using layman's logic to an engineering problem.


Em, personally, were it me, I'd be writing to Matt Hole, detailing the facts, MMCs response and asking his opinion on it. I believe he comes from an engineering background, so it would be interesting to get his take on what happened and whether he believes it to be acceptable.

I wonder if the bolts go into captive nuts in the chassis. That's how the roll bar seems to be attached. I wouldn't expect to see an arrangement like on the trads, and bolts obviously can work loose, but on a steering rack you would imagine they would use some form of locktite. The thing is, if this car didn't have the fasteners fully tightened during build, then it was a one off caused by "negligence" at some level. The build book will show who did that installation and who approved it.

But if that steering rack was fitted correctly at build and the fasteners have loosened, then it could happen to any CX. That's the issue.

As Dave says the build sheets will have the initials of who did the build up and then at the end of that subsection (eg chassis) a checker

These sheets are held by MMC and are not shared with the customer, I was not allowed to take a photo of mine each week we went to see the progress, but it was laying around in the car to have a quick sneaky peek at

Under QA faults like this should be properly investigated and additional checks added to the build instructions

Aerotaff have you spoken to the management at Morgan? I would have rejected an invoice for your case.
