Dear TM’ers and particularly our Continental friends. We are off very shortly, sadly not in the Plus 8 to visit some of North and NE Italy, South Austria and Slovenia . It’s not a long trip, probably only 4 or 5 weeks and we would love some suggestions for places to visit on the way back.. Ideally it would be in parts of Austria ( I hope the radio will not have the Eurovision winning song on repeat) , more likely South to middle of Germany, Luxembourg ( nothing of interest there surely !??) or Belgium. Again looking for inspiration, places less visited perhaps. We have stayed in Salzburg, Chiemsee, Neuschwanstein Castle area, Innsbruck, Heidelberg, Baden Baden ,Trier, Landau, Rothenburg on der Tauber , Freiburg, Koln , Boppard and qdown the Rhine, Namur area & Brugge. Could include a ‘’prisoner on war camp’ and Ypres this time, perhaps. Any advice or suggestions for a couple of days would be much appreciated…….send you a postcard MM PS Where exactly is the centre of the Black Forest and what are the main towns??k

The centre of the Black Forest, you have to ask CLPlusFour! And north of Luxembourg and Belgium, there are The Netherlands! Lots to see!

I would name Freudenstadt as the center of the Black Forest. When did you plan your trip? You already know a lot of towns around the Black Forest. For me, the most interesting is probably Baden Baden and Freiburg. On the western side, I can recommend Rottweil and my home town of Villingen. All very small towns but with a lot of charm. If you can let me know your travel dates and it is compatible with my schedule, I would be happy to show you my home on a tour.

[align:left][/align]This is an excellent driving route in the Black Forest, created by Porsche Experience. It is something of a navigation challenge - most is on B roads or less - but has some great driving and good scenery. https://roads.porsche.com/content/en/routes/black-forest-and-rhine-valleyThis sporty road trip from/to Baden-Baden offers a mix of well-constructed A-roads, including the renowned Schwarzwaldhochstrasse (or Black Forest High Road), and, above all, small winding country roads that are sure to get the pulse of any sports car enthusiast racing. You will leave the well-constructed A-road for the first time at the Mehliskopf mountain and enjoy curve after curve as you navigate the Black Forest. The All Saints Waterfalls offer a beautiful place to take a break before the challenging route takes you further south. A further exciting driving section will guide you via Bad Peterstal-Griesbach (one of the Black Forest’s famous mineral springs) towards Freudenstadt and Baiersbronn. Following the B294, you will once again hit winding country roads. You can look forward to a further stunning view at Gernsbach before the final winding stage takes you back to Baden-Baden.

there are The Netherlands! Lots to see! Many beautiful places of course — but driving is somewhat hampered by the national 100 km/h daytime limit on all motorways. Makes NL particularly tedious if you come from Germany at 250km/h (not in a Morgan, obviously :-) ).

Eltz Castle, 120 kilometers away from Cologne, is a must-see. For me, it's one of the absolute highlights in Germany. https://burg-eltz.de/en/homepage

Great stuff guys, fountain of knowledge . ‘Did’ Koln last summer so the castle better be standing when we return in a couple of years . My wife has thrown a curve ball and suggested somewhere in Luxembourg! Mondorf les Bain ……seems small but anyone been ? We could come back and have a night in Rottweil/Villingen * and another filling up with cheap petrol in Mondorf (assuming petrol is still cheap in Lux.) We tend to blast through the night to Slovenia. Does anyone know a better non toll (until Austria) way, appreciate it but we have found this the best so far : Le Shuttle late afternoon early eve on a Saturday , to Charleroi, Namur, Lux. Sarrbrucken, Permasens to Landau ( we call this Shoe Alley **) Stuttgart, Munchen , Saltzburg, Villach and into SLO for breakfast or lunch depending on roadworks and Le Shuttle delays . Best MM * Clemens, likely to be around 7/9th July. Will DM if we decide this is the route home . ** we used to stop on shoe alley - soo many shoe outlets for my wife and a shoe museum for me whilst she shops BUT now due to careful planning by me we pass by in the middle of the night !!
