I just recently took delivery of a 2003 +8. I love the car but at 81, I find the steering at slow speeds uncomfortably difficult. Has anyone installed one of the power steering kits from berrybrook? What was your impression of the unit as a whole?

In Miscellany the monthly magazine of the Morgan Sports Car Club there is a regular advert from Classic Driving Development offering hydraulic power steering kits including for left hand drive Plus 8. Check out their site here - DIY fitting is possible.

It can be fitted by a competent spanner juggler and I recommend it. I have just fitted a smaller steering wheel (14 inch wood rim Moto-Lita in place of the 15 inch leather one) and I'm more pleased than ever. It provides the right amount of 'heft' and balance and avoids the tendency to over steer (as opposed to over-steer) because of the assistance. The only other tweak has been the purchase of string-back leather driving gloves which provide a good grip on the wooden wheel but sadly don't make the car go faster (unlike the re-map and sports exhaust recently fitted by Williams)

There are electric systems but I have no experience of them except Morgan's version on a 3.7 Roadster. I recall I did like the assistance because my 2004 Roadster was always too heavy at low speeds but I was too hung up on the rev hang to notice much about the steering.

Drove across country last night and the whole car was just wonderful.

I recommend the CDC system now fitted by Alasdair at CDC on my 2004 Roadster series 1. I considered the Ezee electric system as a friend with a Duratec Plus had it. He said it was OK, but it had lost the natural self-centering out of a corner. It had to be consciously steered straight. I didn't drove his car so cannot give any driving impressions. Berrybrook quoted me just under £5,000 to supply and fit the Ezee system compared with £3,660 that CDC charged.

Alasdair was super to deal with. He did exactly what he promised. Not only is it lighter at parking speeds, it is also much easier to place around corners which is a real bonus. I'm reasonably competent with a set of spanners but was glad that I paid the charge of £780 incl. VAT to have him fit it. It was a case of grit your teeth and spend the money once. I have no connection with Alasdair other than as a customer.
