Mine came a little loose last night after much gear selection in London traffic. I've heard mention of grub screws but cannot see any. The lift to select reverse detent remains in correct place but the knob itself previously locked, just turns without any sign of it screwing onto threaded gear stick of the remote select MT82 gearbox.

I couldn't move mine at the first attempt by hand. I had to use a mole wrench VERY carefully having first wrapping the ring with a length of old bicycle tube. Then holding the top with a rubber glove it came free. There are three tiny allen grubscrews to apply a tweek to.

Thanks Doug. I have managed to remove gear knob which I believe is unique to Roadster 3.7 which also has a spring loaded lifting sleeve as reverse detent. Both you and Jon describe a ring below knob to be screwed down but unless I misunderstand haven't such. See pic showing underside of mine. ![[Linked Image]](https://i.imgur.com/nrcboYn.jpg) This shows a plastic insert to engage with threads which has been a little mauled by unscrewing. Three grub screws 120° apart (two can just be seen if you zoom in) through inner metal part are obviously to secure. I can only assume the outer part of knob unscrews from inner to allow access to grub screws but where to grip Note also how face of inner part has been roughly machined by MMC to allow knob to screw further onto shaft I presume. Final pic of gear stick and detent although probably not relevant. ![[Linked Image]](https://i.imgur.com/MjQ92yn.jpg)

That looks different to the one I was referring to. I have a mazda box. On that, the stick is plain with a plastic sleeve, over which slides an aluminium threaded cylinder, held by the grubscrews. The knob then screws down onto the threaded sleeve and the ring screws upwards to meet the knob and secure it in position. There is no lift detent. Looking at your pics, it looks like your stick is actually threaded. I am also a bit confused that the knob is circular whereas the lower section on the stick is a “flattened” circle…so wondering how they come together. Looking at the knob, I can just see the grub screw entries. Looks like you need to unscrew that cylindrical piece (with the rough cut on it) from the actual knob itself. Is there room to get a long nose locking pliers to grip it? Once it’s moving, it will probably come out easily. You would then screw that bit onto the gear stick and secure in position with the grubscrews and finally screw on the knob part. If you have a gearchange motif on the knob, it might be trial and error to get that looking the right way before finally securing.

Thanks again Doug. Yes the fact that Roadster 3.7 with MT82 gearbox is unique was the point I was making. As you suggest it looks as though outer part of knob itself unscrews from inner. I guess I need to find a way of holding recessed same in vice whilst I grip outer part of knob. Once separated the finessing to have shift pattern correctly orientated will be easy. Can I assume it's a right hand thread as well
