Let us know how you get on with the reader, because I've had no luck so far connecting with my GDi.

Some times when I start my 2018 Plus4 (in he time he starts…) he‘s shaking like a dog fresh out of the water. And think: does he shake the wings away?
But after some seconds he runs smooth.
But it‘s usual after you had disconnected the battery. There are also some words about it in the manual.

Thank you Alan. Could you describe "a bit rough" on your cold start, just for comparison purposes? It fires up and revs to 2000 RPM (which they are prone to do) but unless I keep my foot on the gas it'll drop back and misfire to the point of almost cutting out.

I think you have coil packs per plug. Could one be faulty & engine temp resolve that as it gets warm? What do Ford forums tell you

Let us know how you get on with the reader, because I've had no luck so far connecting with my GDi. Will do. After a bit of research I can see that the one I ordered is a very cheap (in multiple senses of the word) item. ELM327 seems to be some kind of protocol or standard rather than a brand, and there are better and worse ones.

Unfortunately car has now developed another more troubling fault: it won't start -- makes a racket when I turn the key, lounder than a simple solonoid/relay click (if relays even click?), kind of like a bb gun firing at about 4 shots per second, so trying to get that sorted is now job 1.

It wont help with warranty if they know you have been fiddling about yourself. Up to them to resolve just how you get it back to them as it won't start!

It will be flat-bedded back to the dealer (which I suspect is closed for our notoriously lengthy Swedish holidays, which means a Morgan-free summer. Sigh.) Thanks everyone for so helpfully pitching in with guidance and advice!

It fires up and revs to 2000 RPM I believe this is not untypical for a car with a fly-by-wire throttle. I think what is happening is that the ECU transitions from the cranking map to the cold start map to start the engine, then it looks for a valid Pedal Site signal from the throttle to see what the torque demand is. When it gets a signal it then knows what the target revs are (idle in this case) and lets the revs drop down to the desired level. Why 2k revs? because in the absence of a correct throttle signal this will give you enough revs to drive the car, just like it was in limp mode. The GM Ecotec engine in my 4/4 does the same thing, runs up to just over 2k rpm on startup and then drops down. Doesn't do it when the engine is hot, presumably because the cold start map isn't necessary and it transitions straight to the normal running map.
