I have always resisted the "filled for life" approach, whether this is brake fluid, coolant, gearbox oil or axle oil. Absolutely. So many modern innovations are aimed primarily at extending service intervals, but on pampered vehicles such as our Morgans, why would anyone seek to not keep the thing fully serviced, especially when the cost is so low?

Dave W ……most scary drive of my life was on the M6 back to London . We had visited a friend in Lancashire for some reason went in the Kangoo. I noticed a bit of an ‘oil’ puddle on our friends drive whilst visiting and after leaving the car started to jump out of gear at about 55/60 mph. Stop and start again and it went for a few miles but jumped out of gear regularly If I kept about 45 it seemed to be OK, no jumping out of gear but the drive down the M6 and M40 in the evening and night at that speed was frightening. Lorries bearing down on us for many hours. Did think about staying over but now it was after midnight and still very busy Got back home in the early hours in one piece and took it to a gearbox place that had rebuilt a Santa Fe box for me , so I had an idea of the cost ! The gearbox is a sealed for life box but he said let’s change the oil. Cost £20 as a favour and has been fine for the last 3 years - no problem !
Seems to adhere to your theory Dave ! Best MM PS Going to Dachau concentration camp tomorrow……as a Boomer I feel I must show respect . We intend to visit Ypres area also on the drive back .

If you can go to Vimy Ridge. If that doesn't convince of how mad war is nothing will. The address is:- Route départementale 55, Chem. des Canadiens, 62580 Givenchy-en-Gohelle, France

When I bought my 1986 Plus 4 from the factory the first thing I did was to flush out the DOT 4 and replace it with DOT 5 silicone at first service. Since I used the car only for a month every two years as I was living overseas and car was in storage in between. In 2012 I shipped it to the U.S. and put it on the lift and drained the silicone. Looked good as new. I just flushed it again last weekend and still good as when I put it in. I have had my 1958 +4 on silicone since around 1976 since I was living in a very high humidity area of the world. I flush and replace every 10 years whether it needs it or not. Have not put silicone in the M3W(2012) yet. Living in Arizona we pray for rain and humidity!

I have had DOT5 in my braking system for seven or eight years, no issues. And to this day I have never heard of anybody with brake failures after switching to Dot5. Of course that does not mean that it has not happened or will happen, but if so it is strange that nobody reports it. So appearantly, DOT5 seems to be safe in Morgans, at least the more contemporary ones (mine is 2017). But what I also did, was putting DOT5 in my clutch system at the same time. So aproximately two years ago it began to leak - first the slave cylinder, then a year later the master cylinder. Both had to be replaced, the gaskets and membranes were shot. The slave change was an engine-out job. I cannot say for sure that the DOT5 was the reason, but I am quite suspicious to this not being a coincidence - but it might be. So I think putting in DOT5 is an experiment. The rubber parts might be compatible, or they might not. You do not know unless there is plenty experience of compatibility - as it seems for Morgan brakes. And unless this experience nearing proof exists, I would not recommend it.

Worth mentioning that silicon based DOT 5 brake fluid is universally not recommended for mixing with glycol based DOT 4 due to their differing chemical compositions. There is also glycol based DOT 5.1 though with a generally higher temperature rating than DOT 4 and best suited to cars with ABS.

What an interesting observation in the nature of human behaviour this has been....(-:
I guess the faithful as ever will adopt their beliefs and stick to them regardless of alternative information being made available, but then the source of that information is open to question is it not...? Well definitely not for those who chose to believe black is white or the inverse...? (-:
Who here has done the tests required to prove to themselves that which they believe is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.... My guess is NO ONE... (-:
Believe in Google, Wiki, Chatbox or A.I.....? Given the content of this thread it seems there are more than enough options to choose from on TM alone...? (-:
Now whether a manufacturer in a country well known for litigation would print downright lies on their box containing DOT 5 on which it seems possible countless lives might depend upon daily.... I really don`t know for sure.
From the old box of Automec DOT 5 I have sitting beside me at this moment in time ( photographic evidence available if required...though that`s easy to fake too...(-:)
THE MOST ADVANCED BRAKE AND CLUTCH FLUID EVER FORMULATED.. NEVER NEEDS TO BE REPLACED.. WILL NOT DAMAGE PAINTWORK...LESS RISK OF FIRE..HIGH BOILING POINT OF 260Deg C
HELPS TO ELIMINATE CORROSION... ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY...TOTALLY NON-TOXIC...
TO USE SBF, SIMPLY DRAIN OUT THE OLD FLUID, MAKE SURE THE SEALS AND HOSES ETC ARE IN GOOD CONDITION, THEN REFILL WITH SBF.
There is a label supplied for attachment on or near the master cylinder, to advise that DOT 5 is in use in the system, however the description on the box is as follows :-
BOTH FLUIDS WILL WORK SAFELY TOGETHER..
Just looked around the box and there is a label on the bottom with a pickdate 20/11/01....This fluid was given to me a few years back by a friend, lay in my garage for a number of years, until as I mentioned earlier I decided to clean up my callipers and replace the pads, discovering torn dust seals, I replaced them, and used the now proven far from "new" brake fluid in my +8 to flush through the system... and that is still the fluid that is in my Mog today..
My Mog has sat for many years while I was involved in various self build projects, rarely used but taken out for an occasional blast to blow away the cobwebs, so not the best use of such a wonderful machine. Automec Dot 5 in use in both brake and clutch for the 23 years I have owned it..... I guess I too am a believer... Just like the Monkeys..? (-:
I am not of the type who needs to win arguments, just seeking to SHARE experiences in the hope that it might help anyone, and I have made many mistakes along the way...
As ever.. each to their own..err.. beliefs..(-: Quoting my previous post seems a tad weird, though just went out to the garage to check the spec off the label on the box of Automec DOT 5 I have used in my Mog, to be sure that the information in my last post was accurate. Other than the above, I would ever defer to that which RichardV6 advises...
