Hi all. Currently doing a steel to wire wheel conversion on my 1975 4/4 with a Salisbury 7HA rear axle. I’ve got the new hubs and I’m about to order bearings for the front, but I’ve never stripped the hub off of a Salisbury axle before and I’m a little unclear as to what I’m going to find. I understand that it’s a tapered fitment so I assume I’m going to need to replace the bearings. Can I remove the hub without removing the half shaft? If I need to replace the hub bearings I’m assuming I then need to check the end float. If this is the case, what sort of shims are needed and where can I buy a kit? Many thanks in advance!

I've had to remove the hub on mine a couple of times.

First time was an absolute nightmare, and in the end had to remove the halfshaft, take it down to Jack and Billy Bellinger ( https://jb-engineering.co.uk/ ) where they used a traction engine hub puller, oxy and a VERY large sledgehammer to get it off. Turned out that it had been installed with the Woodruff key the wrong way round.

Second time (to replace an axle seal) was much easier, although I had purchased a heavy duty hub puller in the meantime. Still needs time to 'soak' but keep the pressire on and it should come off.

If everything is OK, and you have no leaks, I'd be inclined just to replace the hub and leave everything else alone. I've played around with mine twice and have left all the shims etc as original.

JB Sports Engineering are the experts and a good source for parts (and only about 30 miles from you). You are more than welcome to borrow my Hub Puller if needed.
