Rumour has it that a fellow DonMogger cleaned his stainless steel wire wheels in the dishwasher when his better half wasn't looking. Probably apocryphal but still makes me smile.

I have cleaned non critical parts in an old dishwasher before, but you have to make sure all the salt is flushed out first and not use cleaning tablets as they're too aggressive

I would never clean stainless as the potential for reactions that give weird sort of shadow colours would be a risk too far

I think the stain that appears on stainless products is from the nickel content of the steel it can be removed very easily by white vinegar.
