Yesterday we took the train from Doncaster to Aberdeen.

Doncaster to Edinbugh 3hrs 1min.
15 minute connect
Edinburgh to Aberdeen 2hrs 20mins.
So we traversed the Forth Bridge, (done the new road bridge a few times), and then the Tay Bridge.

Made a nice change watching the world go by.

Also the view of Durham Cathedral from the railway viaduct is spectacular.

Agree, Ive taken that route by train on a number of occasions, and the views are superb!

When I repatriated myself to the UK around 2011 I travelled everywhere by train or bus having spent the previous 12 years living on a sailing yacht. By then I had my bus pass and an annual seniors rail pass. At that time I owned neither car nor motorbike and having spent so many years on the boat didn't miss them. I did have access to my partners car when needed but hancoured after a classic vehicle so in 2015 bought a 1960 Velocette Venom, a 1966 Land Rover then a new Morgan M3W followed - the rest is history

Rail and bus travel are a relaxing way of seeing the countryside as is travelling at 3 mph on a narrowboat I later found.

I understand exactly where you are coming from. One of the reasons I've always had an open top car all my life, is because roof down you experience the whole journey differently from the clear view of the sky above, the wind rush, the warmth of the sun and the smells you experience from the area you are passing through always for me heightens the enjoyment of the journey

Agree with that .... will be doing the Aberdeen to Edinburgh part ourselves in a couple of weeks (a Goldsworthy exhibition Mrs Image wants to view and a couple of roaming about days planned)..... much nicer on the train ... having traipsed up and down the road from Fraserburgh to the South dozens and dozens of times while racing it's become dull and tedious (not as scenic as the train route and you shouldn't really be rubber-necking at the wheel anyway) ..... for 'trips to town' the 45 miles down to Aberdeen is done by (free) bus ..... and trips ending in a city done by train ..... driving reserved for destinations without public transport, towing and road-trips in the Morgan.

Driving through Glencoe is a completely different experience in an open-top.

Only been thru Glencoe twice , both times roof down, first time in a Morgan and more recently in Sue's SLK and without question you are certainly aware that something feels very different about it, even if you didn't know it's tragic history..

We've done Glencoe twice in torrential rain, and that's quite an experience in a Morgan. We've also witnessed inconsiderate and ridiculous parking, even in the few car parks at the roadside.

I went to Glencoe this spring but sadly it was in a coach as side trip from my cruise down Loch Ness and beyond (recommended: Google Lord of the Glens). It was not the first time I'd been up that road but did not recognise it in clear blue skies (yes they do happen) beautiful beyond belief.
However, if you should take this road take the turning off to Loch Etive. You might meet folks who believe it was used in Skyfall. Be that as it may, I discovered it years ago long before James B. It is enough to say that's where my ashes are going when I fall off the perch.

We cruised the Caledonian Canal on Lord of the Glens several years ago. Highly recommended - to the extent that we are tempted to repeat the trip.
