My 1978 4/4 has a problem when turning right, indicator not working.

There has been an intermittent issue with both indicators for a while, but now the right indicator is dead as the proverbial dodo.

Hazard switch illuminates and flashes both sides, so I assume the flasher unit is OK, and both dash lights flash under this circumstance.

I did previously have some corrosion issues in the lights themselves, but with some patience and WD40 the lights work perfectly now on "hazard", but on right indicator neither front nor back flash and no dashboard light.

Any thoughts on where to go next? Indicator switch?

Whilst ratlling around under the dash, I did find what look to be two spare spade connectors from the loom, one with a red wire and the other grey, but I think this is unrelated and I can't see the other end for either of them, they appear to be behing the w/w h/l switch which I think is redundant, at least on my car.

On mine there are two relay/flashers - one for the indicator circuit and one for the hazard circuit. It may be the indicator one had broken.

That's an odd situation as described and seemingly caused by two faults:

1) The r/hand dash repeater bulb may be blown since it never works on hazards or when right indicator selected. Check wiring to it as well though.

2) The selector switch when right selected is not functioning. Look for green/white lead from same checking switch and connection to same.

Note although the hazard switch with it's own flasher unit are common sources of indicator issues, as described this part of circuitry seems to be working correctly and allowing left indicator to be selected with hazards off.

As Richard said, check wiring. The live feed to the indicators goes through the Hazard Switch and if the switch is a bit dodgy, the indicators may only be getting a sporadic feed.

Thanks for the suggestions so far.

I do have a replacement indicator switch, but when I unplugged the old and plugged in the new off the car it didn't make any difference, but that might have been earthing, I was just trying to see if it worked before pulling everything apart.

I'll fiddle around again and report back. I have discovered in this process that I'm not as bendy as I once was. Mrs Druid was clearly right all along.

You can learn a lot about your issue by tracing power with a multimeter set to DC volts. Start with the green wire from hazard switch to indicator flasher unit. With ignition on and hazard switch off this should show continuous +12 volts, then follow along to indicator switch etc.

Just musing before I can crawl under the dash. Does the fact that left turn works, but right does not, change where I should be looking? Thanks in advance

Yes, the hazard switch and relay should affect both sides. I'd go for the dash bulb first and then possibly switch contacts (if you're sure indicators are wired and earthed properly)
