Hello Graham,
Thank you too. Mine is a '98 model (so definitely similar) and I've also heard/read that there are problems with the immobilizer. It's strange that it briefly starts and then shuts off. Apparently, there's also a module for the immobilizer that completely disables it. But that costs €200. That wouldn't be a problem if it worked afterwards. If not, it would be a lot of money for nothing. So your tip is a good starting point to test if anything changes. Thanks

Hello Graham, I tried it that way. Unfortunately, it doesn't start. :-(

Hi John, thank you very much. The fuel pump is working. I don't think that's the problem. Okay, the filter would be a new option. What is the ECU? What can I do about that? Sorry, I like tinkering with cars, but I'm not a professional. ;-) regards Sven My 93 T16 has no mobiliser and the ECU is different to yours and likely not in the same place on the bulkhead but most likely a square rectangular flattish metal box, it controls fuel and ignition. You might need to unbolt it to read the MKC number. You can try to get it repaired or get a second hand one on Ebay but you will need to get it programmed to the immobiliser or get the immobiliser removed by a specialist. Perhaps a TMer with a 98 T16 could be more help with the ECU information and the fuel pump relay position (to do a temporary swap). keep trying Sven, regards John k

Hi John,
thank you very much. Yes, I'm going to remove the immobilizer completely. There seem to be constant problems with it.
Yes, it is a square-shaped part. Does this break down often? I'll try it that way and see if I can find someone who can do it or one from ebay.
Thanks and best regards Sven

Hi Sven, the ECU in my car was replaced once long before I owned it and there has been other issues with various later models I understand. It is probably the most technical part of the car and requires expert repair or replacement if it fails. It is also early technology which possibly does not help its reliability. In my experience it is best to check or replace the easier/ cheaper parts first if only to eliminate them. Try these things first and check one at a time. (Based on my personal experience)
Reset the ECU by turning off and on the red switch behind your seat, (presume you have a red switch?)
( don’t start with your foot on the accelerator as this will over fuel).
Check the seating/ or swap fuel pump relay.
Clean fuel pump connections.
Replace the fuel filter.

Hi Sven, I am afraid I can't help with ECU repairers in Germany, Suggest Google your area. provide them with the MKC number and ask their advice on repair or replacement, regards John k
