I still have 2-3 litres of the original Creosote, kept it in tucked away and just bring it out for a sniff to renew memories of days long ago... used it all over the farm when I was young. On the same note I also have a 1/2 used tin of the original Youngs .303 gun oil from the 1960's.. Also kept that for its smell, brings back so many memories of wandering the farm with my first shotgun.. Youngs .303 is still around I believe, but it no longer smells the same ( or is as good ) the original formula was banned as it was classed " nasty" in the 1990's...

Even wd40 doesn't smell like it used to...

Does our perception of smell change as we get older ?

Certainly my taste is not as sensitive as it used to be, or do folk blame it on post Covid

DaveTheRave ... it's Hoppes #9 gun cleaner that does it for me ... reminds me of my Smith&Wesson days back pre-Dunblane when I used to reload my own ammo ... just one of those smells! 🙂

Happy days, I loved turning up at the range with my S&W 357 magnum 2" barrel when the others had their low load low velocity low noise .32 target pistols ! Foot long flame, helluva bang all in the black at 30'.

Represented Essex and Jersey when i lived there.

Burgundymog .... mine was a model 66, stainless 4" barrel 357 with pachmeyer grips .... not fired a modern pistol since the ban. Though on one road-trip I did fire an colt 45 vintage single-action revolver and a full-auto Thompson sub-machine gun at a range in Wyoming 🙂

It really is a different smell now. I have some old stuff in a (what's left of) gallon bottle. They took all the nasties out a good few years ago.

I love the smell of napalm in the morning......
Seriously though, when young I used to work sometimes with my dad, a coachbuilder. The smell of cellulose paint thinners....pre 2-pack paints. Mixing the paint for spraying and cleaning the spraygun afterwards.
Back to the napalm, we made a version in school during a Science Society explosives evening session. Igniting it safely was the problem but solved. A serious burning smell when ignited.
One smell I liked was java Madura tobacco we added to the blend in the cigar factory. Whenever I spotted a box of it while in the room I would have a sniff. A lovely mellow aroma, much nicer than some others.
I did a tour of the Highland Park Distillery on Orkney. Glorious smell of peat that they used as a fuel. If I have a tot of whisky I like sniffing first. Not just the peaty ones but any malt.

Our eating habits and diet have seen significant change over the er the last 70 years too.
