Has anybody had any experience of THIS type of clip?

If so what size do you use. Having measured my top & bottom hoses I get calliper readings of the diameter over the high point between 47.76 & 51.6mm
Rad side is the larger. What size do I need? I emailed Westfield but after a week no answer. Any size charts seem confusing to me.
Sorry for question which I suspect has an obvious answer.

They are in regular use on modern cars and bikes as a cheap alternative to the good old hose (jubilee) clip. They often require special pliers to fit/remove which is one of the negatives for me.

Main objection though is that they are not adjustable. Many times a slight weep has been cured by the fact that hose clips are, especially if a small socket is used in preference to a screwdriver to tighten. I always replace factory ones with stainless BTW.

Persistent leaks from larger bore (radiator) hoses can be cured by using two adjacent to each other with their screws 180° apart, avoiding the sliding parts being in line. Always tighten hoses when warm through when hose is most compliant.

Finally they can also be replaced with hose in-situ by unscrewing, opening up, fitting over hose and re-engaging thread.

Have used these clips before where frequent and rapid installation and removal is required on small diameter pipes. Eg on competition bikes where a fuel pipe needs to be disconnected/reinstated in order to remove/replace the tank.

I concur with Richard that stainless hose clips are a better option.

Icepack, They are the best clips for coolant systems. Firstly they are designed to apply the correct pressure but do require good hoses and clean connection points.
They apply constant pressure and don't loosen but more they apply even pressure to the whole circumference and don't damage the hose end through distortion. The biggest failing of the jubilee clip is in not providing full circumferential pressure without damage to the hose and of course how tight is tight which also has a detrimental effect. Most hoses fail on the hose side of the fitting when they are used for this very reason.
In most instances you can use water-pump pliers but the correct pliers are so much better and easier to use and starting at around a tenner, no contest!

There are screw clip versions with a sliding inner sleeve that are also preferable to jubilee clips. Sizing. These clips are bought as per hose sizing, so if you have a 12mm hose you buy a 12mm clip.

They look like the ones Ford used to use, I assume because fast to fit OE on the production line, used to seal well and can cope with heat expansion / contraction, if you have some parallel action water pump pliers they work quite well for getting them off

You can normally compress them with a regular set of pliers, but there are pliers available specifically designed for this type of clip that make fitting and removing even easier.

Speed of fitting and removal is their key advantage, but they do also apply even 360 degree pressure, overall if sized correctly to the hose, they work well especially if you've got the right pliers.




Sizing correctly to the hose is essential, so you do need a full range on hand to ensure you're using the correct diameter.

Thanks for replies, think I’ll start by getting some 50mm ones & see if they work. On my original plastic rad the top hose tended to weep & shows signs of distortion of the rad connection, due I assume to over tightening over the years.

Icepack, When you remove the hose check for flashing left by the moulding process, usually two webs opposite each other. remove these if there as they can cause a track forming a small weep.

Plastic tanks and fittings, if you have to remove hoses from these, after lossening the clip and sliding away use a 90' pick to loosen the hose from the rad spigot.
Insert the pick between the two layers and squirt some WD-40 into the gap then gently run the pick around the hose inner seat. You should find you don't need to go far before the seal is broken and you can remove the hose without all the pulling and twisting.
