Congrats on your new CX John, it will be interesting to hear your ongoing experience especially coming from long term Trad ownership

John, out of curiosity, if you could wind back the clock, say, 15 years, and if the CX had been available then, what would you have preferred -- the trad or the CX?

I've always ( being quite tall)l been challenged by the tightness of the trad cockpit and found the foot well too small on long journey's with no where to get comfortable with my left leg after a few hours. Having said that, I enjoyed exploiting the lower performance envelope of the trads, Not a problen with the hood down, but with the hood up, the hood flaps restricted my view out, so I used to crane my neck to see traffic lights change or ask Sue to let me know, when they changed. So good fun in small doses.

I've always been an automatic driver for nearly 40 years now, starting in my early 30's, as I used to drive a lot of business miles and the early automatics whilst slightly crude compared to today;s automatics, made journeys less tiring especially in congestion or on long motorway journeys, just put on the cruise control and point.

The modern auto's are so sophisticated, often faster than a manual and often more economical. With the density of traffic on the roads tin the last few decades, given the choice 15 years ago I would have gone for the CX.

It's been many years since we've done any continental touring in a Morgan and we are now talking about taking this car on touring holidays. , Basically because for the first time in a long time Sue can drive the CX with relative ease compared to our later trads where the controls were just too heavy for her.. In part that recognises and acknowledges we are getting older and we are able to share the driving between us in the CX rather than rely on just me to do all the driving..

I'm sure not everyone will agree with my reasoning, and having explained my reasons for opting for a CX. I've also seen a new Work Edition Plus 4 that's been in storage from new, that I really like as well.Sue may well be up for buying that as well, but I would only use it for a few l blasts around the local countryside, where the cramped cockpit, manual box wouldn't be such an issue for me. I'm sure the CX is more than upto blasting around the countryside, it corners well and flat with high levels of grip, but might get me into more trouble exploiting it's much higher performance envelope. So kind of 'horses for courses'

If the opportunity presents itself. I would test drive/hire an automatic CX over say a weekend, they are a step change, the power steering is nicely weighted, you can use the paddle shift if you like moving up and down the box manually. I did the same return journey to collect the Morgan the week before in Sue's automatic SLK, to go see the CX. A slightly different route about 200 miles shorter. no Malvern detour and less motorways. When we got home in the SLK the week before, we could really feel the long journey with a few aches and pains. Not the case in the CX.

The CX is still a Morgan at heart, turn the wipers on, feel the draughts blowing thru the seals and it's 'home from home' and all the hallmarks of a hand made Morgan we all love and enjoy. I can also understand why someone new to Morgans would find some of the CX draughts and crap wipers, not brilliant sound system to be lacking compared to other comparable sports cars. Coming from trads I see the step changes as a very positive improvements, with some areas requiring further work eg wipers. but Morgan appears to be getting there in it's own sweet time, eg the new CX mirriros now being fitted are an improvement over older CX and trad mirrors.

What really marked things out for me, were the improvement in handling and ability to put the power down in damp conditions. My Roadster 4 seater was less powerful, but the slightest dampness and the wheels would spin and yards of axle tramp, same conditions in the CX and it just went, no fuss; no drama by comparison.

The cx is a great car but the heater is not as good as the trads

Of course I've yet to drive the CX during the summer to experience any engine heat sink into the cabin you get with trads especially with the larger engines. So I've yet to get a feel for how much of the background cabin heating of the trad is more to do with a hot engine heat sink as opposed to a better more effective heater system. Need to get some of the CX draughts blocked to get a more objective view. I do prefer where the heater flaps were on the trads.

John you have had the CX for some time now and moved across from a succession of trads and you are one of the more frequent higher mileage drivers, would you go back to a trad?

I would love both but as I can only have one it is the CX. The reality is that with 2 arthritic knees the CX is more comfortable & better for touring which we prefer, But I can see why people want a trad.

When the day arrives of stiff joints and so on, I will be sad to part with my Trads, but I would go for something less quirky than a CX. Maybe a Merc convertible, if I could find one with a manual box.

Funny isn't it. If the first Plus Six was introduced with a manual box and spare, I would 80% certain to have traded both Trads for one. But the years have made me realise that I would have regretted jumping in, even though the first incarnations are closest to the Trads.
