My Duratec +4 exhaust was always sooty until I had the Wolf Performance ECU upgrade now it is spotless but requires a high speed run in second gear to pass emissions HC.

Also as it has done this from new I would (if haven't done so already check for a faulty/incorrect Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor: If the ECU receives an incorrect signal indicating the engine is always cold, it will continuously enrich the fuel mixture as a "cold start" strategy, even when warm. Morgan are not very good at sorting out the ECU settings for the radiators they use.

When the ducks line up. But the Dealer checked the fault codes and nothing there.

But the plugs are clean as a whistle. So logically, all it can be is secondary combustion in the cat, which reduces gas emissions at the tailpipe, and the soot is the consequence. There's no visible smoke.

Four years ago I cleaned and painted the insides of my Golf diesel tailpipes with hi temp paint. Some of you will remember when I had them red. Anyway, four years on the tailpipes are still clean. Makes me wonder about the bad diesel thing.

If you are getting combustion in the hot cat then that is from over fueling regardless of the cause. You are clearly getting enough air as performance is alright.

granted, injectors are checked at engine manufacture/install but one may have debris effecting the spray pattern from Morgan's install of the fuel system. This could effect the burn and if incomplete would account for the symptom of over fuelling regardless of the delivery volume. Further, I have seen ultra clean plugs from spray pattern errors. It might pay to find an aftermarket ford dealer who specialises in focus ST etc. They will be a lot better at finding this sort of thing out and you won't hear things said like "well it's not in the car it was made for is it!" Nor will you get some kid working on it!

After I lost the former Steve Morris Plus 4 Works Edition at the Silverstone auction, my plan was to get a Plus 4 and get the chip re-mapped and upgrade the exhaust system.

I'm now starting to feel quite lucky that I found the Roadster 110 Anniversary Edition by chance for my power upgrade!

I've probably ended up spending no more than I would have tinkering with a Plus 4, but without the emissions heartache?

From memory, the Plus 4 Works Edition meet Euro 6 emission standards whilst the earlier Plus 4 meet Euro 5, For petrol cars, Euro 6 mainly tightened Particulate Number (PN) limits, introducing a 6.0x10^11/km particle count standard that wasn't in Euro 5, while keeping Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) at 0.06g/km and Carbon Monoxide (CO) at 1.0g/km, with a focus on real-world testing for all emissions. The big shifts were the introduction of PN for petrol and a much stricter NOx reduction for diesels, making Euro 6 vehicles generally cleaner overall. So later Plus 4s produced 154bhp (Works Edition was 180 bhp) as opposed to the 145bhp of the earlier Euro 5 GDI.

Its pretty fair to assume that as a minimum the ECU programming was changed to meet Euro 6 standards, so the later cars with club sport fitment may not have suffered the same problems over meeting emissions standards at MOT time as the earlier cars. From discussions with Matt at Lifes Motors, (as I was thinking of getting a Works Edition) he rarely experiences any emission problems at MOT time with club sport exhausts, as he take sthem with a hot engine to an MOT station that fits a reducing cone to the tail pipe, and so far they have all passed.

What eventually put me off the Work Edition was the amount of corrosion being found on post galvanised chassis cars, quite shocking compared to the earlier cars and a retrograde step IMHO by Morgan taking us back to the experiences of earlier pre galvanised chassis cars and need for regular rebuilds, making the car far more maintenance intensive. I loved to drive my 85 4/4, but those days they sprayed the wings fitted to the body, so painted over the beading, which then cracked with chassis flex, requiring constant touching up and resealing to stop water ingress to the unpainted body work/wing and resultant corrosion.....just spoils the driving experience, getting out a tin of touch up paint every time I came back home.........

The autophoretic change was definitely a retrograde step, and needs regular checks, which is not really up everyones street. The forward facing sections suffer from gravel rash, and the worst section is the double skinned crossmember just ahead of the rear wheels. This will get tiny chips and they will microrust. The black Dinitrol will also tend to mask this process, and that's why I asked for the earlier golden wax 'underseal' finish.

I've added an end cap at each end on the double skinned crossmember, using the exposed bolt end, so no drilling. These are a simple aluminium curved section, lined with neoprene, and stop gravel rash stripping the coating. The other place to watch is the triangular bracing sections at each corner base of the bulkhead. These are double skinned, and obviously between those skins will be bare steel. Because they are touching, so no fancy coating is going to penetrate far, even though each triangle has a small circular hole on the top.

When my GDI was delivered, I began dripping ACF50 into these two holes. The offside is masked by the master cylinder but can be accessed. So I dripped ACF into the hole, to the brim, left it overnight, and the next day it had soaked into the gap. This went on for days. I didn't stop until one morning, the brimmed holes were still brimmed.

I saw a GDI at Brooklands, so a few years ago, and the nearside triangle was red rust across the whole section. Not good.

A very comprehensive write up on the areas to watch.

Looking back on my Morgan trads, the best driving and most well built with an eye to longevity, with a great engine and gearbox combination would be the 2012 Plus Four Sport.with its larger tyres and one piece rear deck , no 5th wheel was a beautifully balanced trad, that had very compliant suspension and cornered very flat.............I'm sure that era of Plus 4 will in years to come be the one to own and cherish.
