Proper tool for the job though!

Really annoying tree to log ... came half down in the last blow so needed sorting ... unfortunately each 'slice' weighs about 35 kg and has to be carried 50m across brash and mud chewed up by the logging machines to get to the trailer ... and it's raining! .... Deep Joy! 🙂



I'll be back smiling when I look at my log-pile next November though 🙂

I am SOOOOOO suffering toy envy now

No idea what I would do if I had them mind you - probably a monty python flesh wound in 30 seconds.

Great minds think alike, I decided to start on a fallen tree today as well, I’m not going to log it just yet, just stripped the branches so it’s ready when I am, I’ve probably about fifty like this to do,some are massive.

I’ve also added a picture of the quad and the buggy, just to encourage Alistair to be a silly boy.

Ewan ... nice Kit ... how do you find the electric chainsaw? ... I have a little petrol Echo for de-limbing as well as my big saw ... I may be old-fashioned but I like going down into the woods with a gallon of 2 stroke that'll do everything all day. But times change.

The battery chainsaws all perform really well, that wee thing is a pruner, it can be operated single handed. You’d think there’s a danger you’d end up exactly that but so far so good, it’s quite safe despite my lack of care and patience, the poor thing gets seriously abused!😁
It’s mostly used for hacking gorse down to stumps, a prickly job at best, it’s a pity there’s not a good use for gorse, I’m very good at growing it!

Gorse is the bane of my life (along with trees that refuse to stand up!) ... nothing eats it (my horses have a tiny nibble every now and then, but they're daft) ... it's immune to any currently legal weedkiller and if you cut it it grows back from the stumps and a million dormant seeds ... always open to suggestions .... the other problem with cutting it is you're left with a huge volume of debris to get rid of that doesn't like going down the wood-chipper chute. Horrible stuff !🤬

No-one's likely to beat you in the 'toy-box' stakes 🙂 .... notice you have a stump grinder out to play ... fine for removing the odd really annoyingly placed one (or a couple disfiguring a well tended garden) ... but having looked at the 1500 or so I'd like to dispose of I felt like King Canute and decided to let natural rot do the job ... and if it takes longer than my alloted span on the planet then so be it! 😆

I always thought Highland cattle and goats were best at eating gorse. By product being a variety of cheeses, something to go with the

Ewan, I would but when I moved to Dartmouth mid this year one of the things on the list was NO GARDEN. Had enough of the darn green growing stuff. Gave away all my battery and power tools and have not missed them!

It was also two+ parking spaces/garages for the Mogs (fail) and a few other things I wanted.

I’ve heard that Goats wnd Heelin’ Coos would eat gorse, John but I’ve also young Sitka and Larch saplings, they’d scoff the lot.

Went back up there this afternoon, nice sunset. Chopped the root plate from the tree, it pings back into the crater with some force, apparently a favourite way of hiding whatever needs to be unseen for a long while.

Aside from a bit of the tenderest new shoots I've never known anything to significantly graze gorse if there's any other option at all available.

Gorse was used as a primitive dewormer back in the distant past ...I've always wondered if animals are 'self-medicating' when they eat a bit of it.

I've always found the stuff close to un-killable in bulk .... I was recommended to try Roundup with a dash of washing-up liquid, as that breaks down the surface tension and allows the weedkiller to really 'wet' the plant ... may give that a try.

Ps ... I do love the satisfying 'thump' a nice big root-plate makes when it flips back down 🙂
