Would it be viable for a maximum of only 325 cars a year to set up a complete line assembly in the States duplicating facilities that already exist in the UK and don't currently seem to be working at capacity, need to set up support and supply lines as well as depleting the UK workforce. I also wonder as with Rolls Royce and Bentley how much the made in Britain maybe fundamental requirement of its core values appreciated by their buyers.....hence RR and Bentley production has remained in the UK.

innocent hide

There is/was a kind of precedent for this. In its declining years, under foreign ownership, TVR manufactured their successful Chimaera in Malaysia for a while, to serve the Far Eastern market. But it was not an unqualified success https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=147416
But think any other British manufacturing industry that has "offshored" its operations in the interests of economies resulting from proximity to significant export markets. Our once great textile industry (in which I worked for over 25 years) is a classic example frown https://www.cambridge.org/core/jour...9502000/ECBE3E25DFC9C02C1B23B654962BA5B4

There was a recent MMC article in Mog magazine where Matt Hole said the factory was at capacity, "Eight Plus Fours and seven Supersports every week ... that's some of the biggest numbers we've ever built" (and that would loosely align with another article in which the capacity of the trim shop was indicated at 14 cars per week) ... "We'll certainly make more cars in future years than we have this year, but I have no plans to break through 1000 cars."

Very interesting, it is noticeable that every time I go on a factory tour, another area has been freed up to increase capacity eg I presume the final quality control area had been moved out of the trim shop. Be interesting to understand which areas form the pinch points as production ramps up, currently it could be trim, the next pinch point could be eg wood frame production and then the resultant lead times to ramp up the staff with the requisite skills in those areas.

We noticed for the first time the message/control board in the chassis assembly area in December showing the progress , responsible person and remaining time left on the build on each chassis...

The entire Matt Hole "interview" is very interesting and informative. He's an engineer through and through, and has introduced quite a number of changes to the way the factory works, to the benefit of all stakeholders.

Each car has a VQA (Vehicle Quality Audit) with a threshold score of 200 (anything a customer would see is a score of 500, so 200 is really minor) "What's good is that the guy's aren't saying: 'Well it would only be 150 if we had these parts'. Now they say 'It is a 1200, so what can we do to ensure that the supply of those headrests isn't two days late, and what can we do when we package up the mirrors to ensure they aren't scratched ...'.

Really basic stuff, but MMC don't seem to have had this approach / culture before, so the change is refreshingly positive.

What about the Super 3? had a quick look to see if it’s still in production - seems to be.

He did add "excluding three wheelers", but since he didn't give numbers for those, and the numbers for the P4 and SS seem to make up the vast bulk of the available capacity, I'm assuming the demand is low. Happy to be told I'm wrong!

Brands Hatch Morgan’s Supersport demo that I drove twice is well built and feels like there is real engineering depth to it.

The only thing wrong was the interior rear view mirror which had a very severe distortion.

Not looking too bad in Silver - helps with those colour coded front and rear slots.
